More space, more practice time and a central location are just some of the benefits for children who play youth soccer for the Johnston Recreation Department as they start their season on the new fields at the Johnston Athletic Complex on Aug. 22.

"There are 500 to 600 boys and girls between the ages of 4 and 14 playing soccer this season. We have 35 teams and between 90 and 100 volunteer coaches," said Parks and Recreation Assistant Director Matt Lafazia.

Volunteer coaches, Lafazia explained, undergo background checks. In fact, the department does BCIs four or five times a year that encompass all youth sport volunteers.

Parks and Recreation also offers a CPR course to volunteers, under the direction of longtime Johnston firefighter David Iannuccilli.

Safety comes first, but Lafazia said the enjoyment of the participants comes in a close second.

"Soccer should grow as the children enjoy themselves and get in exercise time," said Lafazia.

Although the Johnston Lightning Youth Soccer Organization is separate from Johnston Recreation Soccer, the assistant director said the organizations work hand in hand.

The Johnston Recreation Department is still accepting registrations for youth soccer teams, as well as local businesses or individuals that would like to sponsor a team. For more information, call the Johnston Parks and Recreation Department at 272-3460 or visit www.johnstonrec.com.
