The spring session for the Johnston Lightning U-10 Girls soccer team meant a lot of things for the girls, such as getting exercise, having fun and increasing their soccer skills. It also meant winning – as they played their last game against North Providence last Saturday night at the new Johnston soccer complex, they end their season with a 9-1 record.

At Saturday’s game, the girls were introduced one by one by Johnston Lightning Vice President Glenn Carroll as "Eye of the Tiger" (the theme from "Rocky") played in the background.

Head Coach Dan Robbins’ daughter Bianca got command of the soccer ball right out of the gate and scored four consecutive goals for her Lightning team. Veronica Lopez’ mom cheered from the sidelines as Lopez scored the fifth goal of the game; Julia Pezzuco kicked in the sixth goal, keeping the momentum going.

Robbins continued to shine on the field, contributing two more goals before the end of the first half; goalkeeper Stephania Russilo had held North Providence scoreless.

As the second half got underway, Robbins took her turn in the net. North Providence was out for blood and bounced back by scoring seven goals.

Pezzuco kept them from taking the lead, nailing another goal as the clock ticked down. Gabriella Scarcella cemented the Lightning win with a 10th goal in the last five minutes of the game ending in a Johnston victory with a final of score of 10-7.

Richard Pezzuco, who has been very instrumental in cutting and clearing the trees for the new soccer complex, was recently elected the new Johnston Lightning Youth Soccer president. Former president Mark Gilmore is still involved with the organization but will serve as referee coordinator and on the advisory council.

Pezzuco said he is involved with numerous committees to see that the growth of the new Johnston soccer complex continues.
