Agility, skill and, most of all, determination are just some words to describe the Johnston Lightning Youth All-Girls U-14 indoor soccer team this past fall/winter season.

The momentum was unwavering for the Lightning girls as they took their last challenge of the regular season this past Saturday, against East Greenwich, at Teamworks in Warwick. There, they increased their team record to 7-0-1 by logging a shutout.

Their sole loss came on Dec. 29, as they competed in their annual Christmas tournament.

“We played against Coventry in the Christmas tournament and lost in overtime with a score of 3-2,” explained assistant coach Robert D’Arpino.

D’Arpino, who has been coaching the league for the past two years, went on to say the girls are multi-talented and very athletic, as many of them play basketball, soccer and softball in the spring at Ferri Middle School.

As the Lightning girls’ last regular season indoor soccer competition got underway, Quincy Eacueo guarded the net with her keen moves.

Emma D’Arpino, who previously was a defender and is now playing in a forward position, drew first blood and quickly followed up her first goal with a second.

Forward Carla Porras, who leads the team in the most goals scored, took control of the ball and kicked in two back-to-back goals, ending the first half with Johnston at 4 and East Greenwich scoreless.

During the break, coach D’Arpino said the girls have limited practice time, but are so sharp on the field they are moving up from a B division to an A division, which offers better competition.

The second half began much like the first as Quincy stayed in as the goaltender. The Lightning girls kept the East Greenwich goaltender on her toes as they continued banging in goals.

Shelby Hofknecht found an opening at the net, as did Porras, who fired in her third goal of the game. The girls worked hard to make sure East Greenwich didn’t get on the scoreboard, and ended the game with a final score of 6-0.

The girls go to the playoffs this coming Saturday at 2 p.m. at Teamworks.

“We are going to play either Warwick or Ham and Eggs from South County,” said head coach Steve Eacueo.
