Women’s self-defense seminar to help raise funds for cancer battle

Deborah Robillard was recently diagnosed with stage 4 liver cancer, and Johnston’s own RI Self-Defense Center is kicking it into high gear to help her with her battle.

The center will hold a women’s self-defense seminar fundraiser for Deborah, who is the mother of one of their instructors, Walt Robillard, a decorated war veteran who served distinctively in the U.S. Army. Walt volunteers at RI Self-Defense center and teaches the child and adult classes.

All funds raised will go towards Deborah’s recovery and expenses. The seminar, to be held on December 1 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., is open to all women. Sensei Michael Orsini, owner of RI Self-Defense Center, said that the fundraiser would be a great opportunity for mothers and daughters to share a great experience together while helping out a fellow woman in need.

“We frequently do fundraisers and philanthropic activities-food drives for Operation Stand Down, toy drives, and more-at the dojo, and this time, we are helping a family member in need,” said Orsini.

The seminar will cover strategies for women to help ensure safety, what to look for before an attack happens, and also what to do during and after an attack.

Attendees are asked to donate $25 for the seminar. Those who cannot attend but would still like to help may make a donation of their choice. To take part in the seminar, or for more information, call Sensei Michael Orsini at 949-5600. The center is located at 515 Greenville Avenue in Johnston.
