Woman charged after local company reports $222K in jewelry missing

A former employee of Ross-Simons Jewelers has been charged with embezzlement in connection with the theft of more than $222,000 in jewelry, according to Cranston Police.

Yanill C. Taveras, 26, of 148 River Ave., Providence, was arrested Jan. 31. She was arraigned at Cranston Police headquarters and release on $4,500 surety bail, with a court appearance scheduled for April 25.

According to a press release, a representative of Ross-Simons filed a complaint with police Jan. 29. The company’s management stated that an inventory found jewelry being kept in an office not authorized for use as storage space, and additional investigation led to the discovery that “certain high-value jewelry pieces” – 121 in all, with a combined retail value of $222,152 – were missing.

Police say Taveras, a former employee at the company, was identified as the primary suspect in the matter. Detectives from the Criminal Investigations Unit are said to have then determined that Taveras had “recently pawned large amounts of jewelry” at local pawn shops.

Jewelry items with a total approximate value of $105,650 were recovered from the shops – which police did not identify – and identified by Ross-Simons management as being among the missing items, according to the release.

“Efforts to recover the remaining jewelry is ongoing,” the release states.

Police ask that anyone with knowledge of the items that remain missing contact the Detective Division at 477-5065.
