When it’s too hot, spike it

Most people looked for ways to beat the heat Tuesday evening, especially if they were outdoors at the recreation center. What few joggers could be found made slow loops around the park pond, or better yet, paused for extended periods on park benches to take in the cooling breeze off the water. But there were exceptions, like the Hurricanes and Dig This, teams in the Tuesday night women’s volleyball league. Some of the team members have been playing consistently for the past 20 years. None, however, can rival Jim Tortolani, who has been refereeing the games for 30 years. He reports there are two women’s divisions of varying skill. Ages range from 17 [you must be a Johnston resident if you are that young] to women in their 60s. Play lasts about 45 minutes, enough time to fit in three games. Tortolani urged those interested in learning more to call the recreation department at 272-3460 or visit their website. He could make no promises that the play would be as hot as it was this week.
