(Assault victim creates his own world)

Steve Carell stars as Hoagy, the victim of a vicious hate crime who escapes into his own little world, creating and photographing dolls that act out scenes from WW II.

The movie is based on a true story, although at times appears to be stretched to the limit.

Joyce bought into the story and felt great sympathy for Hoagy, a man who lost his memory from the beating and was terrified to testify against the men who changed his life completely.

Carell is very good as Capt. Mark Hogancamp, living within his creations, only to be interrupted by violent nightmares.

A neighbor (Leslie Mann) reaches out to him as a friend, but her feelings toward him are misinterpreted, causing problems for the troubled man.

While I found the concept to be an interesting one, I thought the story was too much of a downer with a bit too much violence, while Joyce, the romantic, had greater sympathy and understanding for Hoagy and his situation.

The plastic appearances of Hoagy’s creations are admirable, but take up too much of the movie.

Rated PG-`3, with violence and some profanity.
