Volunteers step up, but more needed at Senior Center
The Johnston Senior Center (JSC) has two new additions to brag about.
Volunteer Ellen Trementozzi and five-year volunteer veteran Pat Votolato have each assumed an important role in the JSC’s day-to-day operation. Votolato, who lives in North Providence and most recently worked as the receptionist, is the JSC’s new Gift Shop manager.
“She has already changed the face,” said Assistant Director Millie Santilli. “We’re really excited about what Pat brings to our gift shop.”
With the change comes new hours of operation for the Gift Shop. The Gift Shop will be open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. It will remain open until 8 p.m. on Friday evenings during Bingo.
Votolato, a one-time property company owner, said the Gift Shop would continue to carry everything from “miscellaneous gifts to jewelry and snacks.” The Gift Shop also has scarves and neckties, wall hangings, some china items and a display of 50-cent cards.
Trementozzi, meanwhile, will fill Votolato’s spot as receptionist.
“Ellen has helped us in a lot of different areas,” Santilli said. “She has been a tremendous help with our annual Meat Raffle, she has sold tickets for many of our important fundraising events and is even looking to do more volunteering here at the center.”
Trementozzi had a hand in the work leading up to the JSC’s accreditation as a National Office of Senior Centers “Center of Excellence.”
“It’s people like Pat and Ellen who have helped us become a Center of Excellence,” Santilli said. “And they both have been dedicated to the center’s mission. They are very nice people.”
Executive Director Tony Zompa thanked Votolato for stepping up to fill a need.
“We welcome Pat Votolato, who has graciously taken on the responsibility of managing the Gift Shop. She will be a great asset to our team,” he said.
Zompa also thanked Joanne Rotondo, who managed the JSC Gift Shop for the past few years.
“Joanne came to us with a great deal of experience running a retail shop,” Zompa added. “She did a fabulous job. We wish her good health and well-being in this New Year.”
More volunteers are needed to join the ranks of Votolato and Trementozzi. Volunteers are needed for the Friday night Bingo and Saturday card games, as well as clerks in the Gift Shop, servers in the Dining Room and hosts for Sunday Bridge, a new offering at the Senior Center. Bridge games will be held Sundays from 1 to 5 p.m. Clint Wright will be on hand to teach people the game for the first hour.
Interested volunteers should call Marie Venditti, the JSC’s events and trips coordinator, at 944-3343 during the hours of 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
In other Senior Center news, the annual Hearts and Flowers Party will be held next Thursday, starting at 9 a.m. The Valentine’s Day Party luncheon begins at 11 a.m.
