Further strengthening resources that together answered nearly a quarter-million calls for help from Rhode Islanders last year, United Way of Rhode Island has promoted staff at its 2-1-1 call center, and at The POINT, the state’s aging and disability resource center.

Evelyn Cabrera has been promoted to 2-1-1 call center manager, having spent the previous four years as a bilingual call specialist for the free informational and referral help center that’s available 24-hours day.

In her new role, Cabrera manages a staff of eight, overseeing 2-1-1’s first, second and third shift positions. She is also a Senior Health Insurance Program counselor.

Prior to joining UWRI in 2014, Cabrera spent nearly a decade in various roles with Family Service of Rhode Island. She is a resident of Johnston.

With extensive experience in long-term care, Aura Medina has been promoted to call center manager of The POINT, a statewide network for seniors, adults with disabilities, and their caregivers operated by UWRI and linked through 2-1-1. She previously served as program coordinator for The POINT.

As call center manger, Medina oversees a team that takes 40,000 calls annually, providing information and referrals for long-term care options, and helping seniors enroll in Medicare, Medicaid and other programs that affect quality of life.

Prior to joining United Way, Medina spent more than a decade working at Cherry Hill Manor Nursing and Rehab Center in Johnston. She is a resident of Cranston and currently pursuing a degree in psychology at Rhode Island College.

Following three years as a counselor with The POINT, Sylvia Bernal has been promoted to project lead, Medicare-Medicaid options counselor. In this role, she manages staff and specially-trained volunteers in delivering services to dual beneficiaries, and provides confidential one-on-one options counseling for Medicare-Medicaid individuals.

Additionally, Bernal delivers training updates to Senior Health Insurance Program counselors on the Integrated Care Initiative, Rhode Island’s program to improve the care for those eligible for both Medicaid and Medicare through stronger coordination of healthcare and support services.

A resident of Providence, Bernal studied marketing at the University of Lima in Peru, and attended the Community College of Rhode Island.
