Two Johnston residents honored with Young Leader Award

Two Johnston residents were honored with the prestigious Young Leader Award presented annually by Rhode Island Stated Treasurer Seth Magaziner.

In keeping with tradition, Magaziner honored a total of 56 high school juniors from across the Ocean State who have demonstrated outstanding achievement in math, econ9omics, finance and business related courses with the coveted honors.

“The recipients are also students who are active in his or her community,” added Randall Rice, who serves as Deputy Director of Communications and Shareholder Engagement in the State Treasurer’s office.

To which Magaziner offered, “It is a privilege to recognize members of this generation’s outstanding young leaders. We look forward to this event every year.”

Matthew Silvia, a junior at Johnston High School, and Jenna L. Poirier, who attends the Warwick Area Career and Technical Center, are the two local students who received the honors during as special ceremony Magaziner held at the Rhode Island State House last week.

“As I visit schools across the state, I am inspired by our young people who want to make a positive impact in the world,” the State Treasurer said. “From Cumberland to Chariho, these high school juniors have a record of accomplishment in the classroom, as well as being active in their community as well as demonstrating strong leadership skills.”

Matthew, who is the son of James and Gina Silvia, was inducted into the school’s chapter of the National Honor Society last week and caries a rigorous course load including Accounting One honors.

He’s a member of the Panthers’ varsity soccer squad and basketball teams. He is described as a highly motivated, enthusiastic and devoted student. He plans on pursuing a business degree in college.

Jenna, who is the daughter of Jim and Kim Poirier who live in Johnston, is a junior at the Warwick area Career and Technical center and is also an honor roll student in the electronic program and a member of SkillsUSA.

She has participated in various SkillsUSA competitions and is an active member of her church community. Jenna is described by her teachers as diligent, creative and career driven. She is also an avid photographer.
