Toys for Tots a success

“This is a must stop for my wife Patty and me,” Frank Lombardo, a Johnston state senator who represents District 25, said Saturday night. “We’re honored to take part in such a great, meaningful and important tradition.”

The Lombardos placed several unwrapped new toys in the back end of a Johnston Fire Department reserve rescue vehicle that was already filled with dozens upon dozens of new toys, games and stuffed animals.

The veteran state senator said, “What the Johnston Police and Fire Unions are doing is incredible. They’re always trying to make Christmas special for needy children.”

The Johnston Fire Fighters Local 1950 and Police Union 307 held their annual Toys for Tots Toy Drive last Saturday night at Bar 101 and people showed their generosity by donating toys the groups will deliver to the United States Marine Corps annual toy drive.

“We are very happy with the outcome,” Jon Pistacchio, vice president of Local 1950, said. “There are too many toys to count, but look at this rescue; it’s nearly three-quarters full with toys, and that’s absolutely incredible.”

Pistacchio, Local 1950 president Keith Calci and IBPO officers Sgt. David Loffler, Sgt. Luca Lancellotti and Patrolman Kevin Brady all shared the same sentiments about this year’s Toys for Tots Toy Drive while saying, “We can’t wait for next year; we’re excited to keep this great program going.”

The Fire Fighters Union official said Pete Matteo and Justin Lemieux of Bar 101 played another major role in the annual toy drive’s success.

“They’re always super and gracious hosts,” Pistacchio said of the Bar 101 owners. “They put out a great buffet and help us in many other ways as well.”

Pistacchio then added, “We would also like to thank Mayor Polisena and [JFD] Chief [Tim] McLaughlin for letting us use one of the reserve rescues for this year’s toy drive.”

Last Saturday night’s Toys for Tots Toy Drive party was also made special by a visit from retired Johnston fire fighter Jerry Porter, who dressed like Santa Claus and helped greet toy donors.

“Jerry did a great job for us and helped make tonight extra special,” Pistacchio said. “He passed out candy cane pens and lighted Santa necklaces and spread his holiday cheer and well wishes to everyone.”
