Town Hall employees brighten Christmas

The visitor to Johnston Town Hall seemed overwhelmed as he looked at the pile of wrapped Christmas gifts inside a well-decorated room on the second floor.

“That’s what Christmas is all about,” Valerie Laurito, who works in the Tax Assessor’s office, told the man. “This is the second year we’ve adopted a family with children in need; we all wanted to make sure they had a special day!”

To which the man said: “You people should be congratulated; it’s certainly an extraordinary effort in sharing and caring about those people who are less fortunate than others.”

A total of 12 Johnston employees, who work inside the historic Town Hall at the intersection of Atwood and Hartford Avenues, used their own money to buy dozens of gifts that Laurito said will be delivered anonymously to a family with children who otherwise might not have had a Christmas.

“Mayor Polisena also added to this pile [of presents],” Laurito said. “He was very generous as he always has been whenever we do something like this.”

Meanwhile, Polisena said, “I’m proud to be a part of this great gift giving effort. I’m equally as proud of our great employees who obviously have huge hearts and care about helping others in a time of need.”

The Johnston Town Hall employees who donated and wrapped the presents, that Laurito said will be delivered later this week, were Kelly Abbruzzese, Patty Testa, Vince Baccari, Deb DelFino, Julie Georgio, Charlotte Lanni, Laurie aRusso, Gina Martellini, Cheryl Turchetta, Bethany Alviano and Janet Whiteley.
