Thunderwolves overpower Knights

Posted

The CCRI Knights traveled to Batavia, New York, to take part in the Cougar Holiday Classic over the weekend. The Knights took on Niagara County on Sunday before returning home to Warwick. The Knights fell to the Thunderwolves, 86-65, to drop their record to 4-6 overall.

The Knights came out and competed in the first half after a tough loss on Saturday. The Knights found their defensive stride, holding the Thunderwolves to only 32 points in the first half. The Knights unfortunately were unable to find their groove on offense, and only managed 28 points.

They were in the game and looked to capitalize on good defense in the second half, but were unable to do so, as injuries caught up with the team. The Knights’ short bench caused players to play extra minutes, and the defensive shape fell down. The Knights were staying close and were in the game until the Thunderwolves went on a late run to make the game out of hand. The Knights fought hard, but fell with a final score of 86-65.

The Knights were led by freshmen Josh Williams (Atlanta, Georgia) and Dan Grzych (Providence, Rhode Island). Williams led the Knights in scoring with 18 points, seven assists and two steals. Grzych had his second straight high-scoring game with 14 points, including four 3-pointers with two rebounds, a steal and an assist. Oscar Iteji (Schenectady, New York) just missed a double-double, scoring nine points while ripping down 11 rebounds, and co-captain Chris Garcia (Queens, New York) ripped down seven boards while scoring six points for the Knights.

Head Coach Rick Harris noted the Knights played two good halves over the weekend, but they were unfortunately spread over two games. He did see the positive side with the “young men getting some excellent experience, which will benefit us as we move forward.”

The Knights will look to rebound from the tough weekend when they take on Navy Prep at Vincent A. Cullen Fieldhouse on Thursday night at 7 p.m.
