Three JHS students awarded in art competition

Johnston High School is celebrating the artistic talents of those who recently participated in the 2018 Scholastic Art Awards, in which three students received commendations for their outstanding work.

Since 1923, the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards have recognized the vision, ingenuity and talent of our youth and provided opportunities for creative teens to be celebrated. The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards are presented by the Alliance for Young Artists and Writers. The Alliance is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to identify students with exceptional artistic and literary talent and present their works.

Through the Scholastic Awards, teens in grades 7 through 12 from public, private or home schools can apply in 29 categories of art and writing for their chance to earn scholarships and have their works exhibited and published.

“We’re super proud of our students. There’s really a lot of talent here,” said art teacher and fine arts co-chair Kerry Murphy. “It was really important to us that administration on a district and school level support us in going and having a field trip to see the exhibits. Our students benefit from seeing the best of the best that’s being produced from around the state.”

According to Murphy, the Rhode Island Art Education Association, with the help of countless volunteers, hosted the dropoff of artwork, the judging process, and subsequent exhibition at Rhode Island College's Alex & Ani Building in late January.

From Johnston’s multiple student submissions, three winners were chosen. They include Rachel Madrid, a senior, who earned a Gold Key in Digital Art and her work goes on to the national competition; sophomore Olivia Tashjian, who earned a Silver Key in Painting; and senior Michael Mollicone, Grade 12, who earned a Silver Key in Sculpture.

“We’re so excited. Scholastics is such an established, well known competition and we’re always thrilled with the work our students do,” said Murphy.
