THE GOOD LIAR
* * ½
(Crime drama with a twist)
Helen Mirren and Ian McKellen give good performances as senior citizens who meet through a computer dating service.
Roy is a con man who makes a good living scamming people from their investments. He cons the well-to-do Betty into moving in with her and eventually convinces her to open a joint bank account with him.
Betty's grandson is suspicious and conducts a search on him, discovering details of his past. And then, as the plot moves toward a seemingly predictable conclusion, there appears an ironic twist.
This is one of those "things aren't always as they seem" movies that proves to be a bit convoluted, in spite of good performances by the British co-stars.
Rated R with some profanity.
