Superheroes shine at A Wish Come True's walk in Warwick

Posted

A Wish Come True hosted its first Heroes Walk/Run on Saturday, Sept. 21, drawing approximately 150 people and 20 Wish Families to Warwick City Park for a chance to support one another.

Children were given superhero capes, and the event was a success as enough money was raised for another wish to be granted to a local child diagnosed with a life-threatening illness.

“This was the best day of A Wish Come True in years. To see the families bond and to share their thanks to us was just amazing,” said Mary-Kate O’Leary, executive director of A Wish Come True. “It was great to hear from the kids that their favorite part of the day was the moment of silence for the kids in heaven and releasing the balloons to them. It is just a reminder that these families go through so much.”

Kristin Lessard and Steve Kelly from B101’s morning show kicked off the event with superheroes provided by Rhode Island Comic Con, who led the walk and helped cheer on the participants as they crossed the finish line.

Neighborhood Health Plan of Rhode Island, Dunkin’ Donuts and Batista/Amaral Management, Roofers Union Local No. 33, Greater Southeastern Mass Builders Trade Council and Laborers International Union of North America Local No. 610 graciously sponsored the event. Supporters also included Premier Martial Arts and Lincoln Johnny Lightening Race Club.

“This is what it’s all about,” Nicole Whit said. “Building a sense of community and creating an opportunity for Wish Families to come together to support one another and pay it forward for another family. We are grateful to be a part of the A Wish Come True family as they granted our son Kyrie’s wish in 2015.”

A Wish Come True is the oldest wish-granting organization in Rhode Island and Massachusetts, celebrating 37 years of granting wishes. Since 1982, it has provided wishes to more than 1,600 children and youth.
