The ceremony was brief but of the utmost importance to people like Greg Russo, a veteran faculty member at Johnston High School, concurred.

Sometime around 11:15 Monday morning, JHS secretary Karen Shewcov summoned six undergraduates to come to the main office for a photo of a group several staffers called “The Pride of Cherry Hill.”

In short, the “Super Six” as Russo related, were all first place winners in the school’s highly-successful Science Fair that featured 214 projects and thus earned the right to represent JHS in the always highly-competitive Rhode Island State Science Fair on March 17-18 at the Community College of Rhode Island Knight Campus in Warwick.

Russo, who for years has coordinated the Science Fair with the help of fellow faculty members, said judging of all state finalists projects will take place on Saturday, March 17 that the event will be open to the public free of charge on Sunday, March 18 from 12 to 4 p.m.

“We’re proud of all our students who competed here this year,” Russo related, noting that all honor students are required to enter a project that is counted 20 percent of each student’s third quarter grade. “We certainly wish them the very best at the State Science Fair.”

Those state finalists and their respective projects are: Benjamin Budway, “Launch Angle”; Brandon DeCesare, “Environmental Friendly vs. Chemical Cleaners”; Megan Philbrick, “Urea’s Effect on Chlorine Levels”; Taylor Medeiros, “Effect of Caffeine and Alcohol on Daphnia Heartbeat”; Juliana Ferruccio, “No Silver Lining”; and Nicholas Gallo, “Coding a Game using Unity.”

A total of six students were awarded second and third place honors respectively while four undergrads received special recognition for honorable mention.
