Johnston Holiday Festival

On Saturday, Dec. 7, Mayor Joseph Polisena, the Johnston Community Center Association and the Johnston Parks and Recreation Department will host a Holiday Festival at Johnston Memorial Park from 2-4 p.m.
There will be food, music and a bike raffle. Santa Claus will also make an appearance, so be sure to bring your camera.
The event is free, and donations of nonperishable canned goods are requested. For more information, visit johnstonrec.com.

Johnston Historical Society Holiday Open House

On Sunday, Dec. 8, the Johnston Historical Society will host a Holiday Open House from 1-5 p.m. at its headquarters, located at 101 Putnam Pike, Johnston.
Come in from the cold, traveler, and join the Historical Society for yuletide music, local history, light refreshments and cheer in the restored 1824 farmhouse. The adjacent Johnston History Museum, housed in a replica post-and-beam barn, will also be open. This event is free of charge, and donations will be welcome.

Toddler programs at
the library

Here are some upcoming events for toddlers at the Marian J. Mohr Memorial Library, located at 1 Memorial Ave. in Johnston:
Now through Nov. 26 at 10:30 a.m., there will be stories, songs and fingerplay for babies and toddlers with a grown-up. This program is geared for ages newborn to 2½.
Preschool Storytime will be held on Wednesdays until Nov. 27 at 10:30 a.m. There will be stories, songs, puppets and fingerplay for children ages 3-5 with a grown-up.
Holiday Storytimes will be held on Dec. 3 and Dec. 4 at 10:30 a.m. This program is geared for babies, toddlers and preschoolers and features holiday stories, songs and puppets. Caregivers may bring snacks or drinks if they wish.
“Sing-Along with Mr. Rowland” will be held Dec. 10 at 10:30 a.m. Dance with shakers and sing along with family favorites and best-loved children’s songs. The program is open to all ages with a grownup.

At the Mohr for children

Storytime has begun and offers stories, songs and rhymes for babies, toddlers and preschoolers and their caregivers. The program is held on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and is open to all ages. Storytime starts at 10:30 a.m. There is no need to register.
Saturday Drop-In Crafts are held when the Mohr Library is open. Come anytime between 11:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. for several self-directed projects for kids and parents to do together. Craft programs are not appropriate for children under 3 as small parts might present a hazard.
Lego Club meets every second Thursday of the month from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Play with Lego bricks donated by Lego Systems. Children ages 5 and up may attend and no registration required.
“I Spy” is held anytime when the library is open. Play “I Spy Pokmon,” “I Spy Pete the Cat” or three other “I Spy” games that a talented volunteer has made for you and get a sticker for each one. The program is open to all ages.
The Mohr Library offers discount passes to several fun places in and around the state. These passes have been donated by the Friends of Mohr Library. For more information, call 231-4980 and press 5 for the children’s room.

Free yoga for breast
cancer survivors

The Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Foundation and Yoga at Studio Exhale offers yoga for breast cancer survivors every Sunday from 6-7:30 p.m. Yoga at Studio Exhale, 1263 Oaklawn Ave., Cranston, is the place to be to explore slow flow, gentle movement to create space in the body and eliminate stress. This class is designed to restore the nervous system and help release deeply held tensions from the body and mind. Visit gloriagemma.org for more details.

Happening at the Johnston Senior Center
 
The Johnston Senior Center is looking forward to a very active December. Beginning on Dec. 1 through Dec. 3, there will be a trip to Atlantic City & Radio City Music Hall with the Famous Rockettes Christmas Show. The trip departs at 7:30 a.m. The cost is $299 per person.
On Dec. 4, there will be a trip to Sturbridge Village for “A Holiday Celebration.” Departure is 10:45 a.m. and the trip costs $65 per person.
On Dec. 6, Bingo will be featured at a new time slot beginning at 2 p.m. There is a free build-up special with each package, and the event is sponsored by Anchor Bay at Pocasset.
On Dec. 9, center will hold its Volunteer Christmas Party. On Dec. 13, the center’s Christmas Party will be held.
A trip to La Salette Shrine is scheduled for Dec. 13 with a departure time of 3 p.m. The trip costs $10 per person.
On Dec. 21, you can join in a trip to Mohegan Sun Casino at a cost of $15 per person. You will receive $15 in free play and $10 for food or free buffet.
Dec. 28 will feature a trip to Foxwoods Casino at a cost of $15 per person. Participants will receive $10 slot play and $10 for food or free buffet.

Fez-tival of Trees

The Rhode Island Shriners will present the sixth annual Fez-tival of Trees at Rhodes on the Pawtuxet in Cranston over the Thanksgiving weekend. Hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 30, and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 1. A suggested donation of $2 for adults is appreciated, and there is no charge for children.
The Fez-tival is a fun, family-friendly event that features an impressive display of trees and wreaths donated by local businesses and organizations, as well as music, complimentary visits with Santa, character appearances and plenty of free activities for children. In addition, more than 80 vendors and crafters will be available in the Holiday Marketplace, offering a variety of quality items for purchase. There will also be a large raffle with approximately 100 items up for grabs.
