Friends of the Poor Walk/Run

On Sunday, Sept. 29, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul will hold its 12th annual Friends of the Poor Walk/Run in Garden City Center, beginning at 10 a.m.

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is a nonprofit volunteer organization providing person-to-person service to Rhode Islanders in need, offering material assistance, friendship, and dignity to all. Join in for music, food and family fun, and don’t forget to bring toiletry and clothing donations to help local friends in need.

Bowl For Kids’ Sake

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Rhode Island will host the fourth annual Bowl For Kids’ Sake event on Saturday, Sept. 28, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Lang’s Bowlarama, 225 Niantic Ave., Cranston. Participants are encouraged to register teams of five to participate in a private bowling party and raise donations from family, friends and colleagues leading up to the event with a fundraising goal of $100.

The fundraiser is being presented in part by MetLife Auto & Home, Savers and the Wireless Zone Foundation for Giving. Cindy and Anthony Capobianco are mentors and longtime supporters of BBBSRI, recognized in 2018 as Big Couple of the Year.

Chopstick Auction

The annual Chopstick Auction at Kelley Gazzerro VFW Post 2812, located at 1418 Plainfield Pike in Cranston, will be held on Sunday, Oct. 20, from 12-4 p.m. For a cost of $20, attendees will be able to participate in more than 100 raffles. Proceeds will benefit nonprofit community organizations.

Johnston Police Explorers

Open to youth between the ages of 14 through 20, the Johnston Police Explorers program provides a unique way to learn about law enforcement. The program is challenging and demanding, but it is also fun and a great learning experience.

A few areas the Explorers learn and participate in are firearms training, self-defense, traffic investigation, criminal investigation and community policing.

Cranston Hall of Fame

The 29th induction ceremony for the Cranston Hall of Fame will be held Friday, Oct. 25 at the Alpine Country Club, located at 251 Pippin Orchard Road, Cranston.

This year's inductees are Michael Chalek, David Schiappa, Meri Kennedy, Steven Maurano and the late Leonard DErrico.

Defenders of Animals Yard Sale

Defenders of Animals will hold their annual Community Yard Sale at the Edgewood Congregational Church, located at 1788 Broad St. in Cranston, on Sept. 28 from 8 a.m. through noon.

Sacrament of Anointing to be held

Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick and Elderly will be celebrated at St. Bartholomew Church, 297 Laurel Hill Ave. in Providence on Sept. 21 at 11:30 a.m. by Father Pranzo, Parochial Vicar of St. Bartholomew Parish.

Anyone whose health is seriously impaired by sickness or old age may receive the Sacrament. This special mass will be offered every third Saturday every other month. For more information, call 401-944-4466. Pray shawls will be available free of charge. Donations are appreciated. All are welcome.

At the Mohr for adults

A program titled “Historical Roots of Voting Rights,” featuring professor Beth Shinn, will be presented on Wednesday, Oct. 16, from 6-8 p.m. at the Mohr Library.

On Monday, Oct. 21, the library will present “Rhode Island Women’s Fight for Voting” from 6 to 8 p.m. The program will feature professor Deb Mulligan.

Abby Hutchinson’s “Sweet Freedom Songs” will be presented on Wednesday, Oct. 23, from 6-8 p.m. It will feature actress Deborah Goss. Sign up at the Reference Desk for this musical look at “History in Word and Song: Abolition, Suffrage and the 1800s” as Goss portrays Abby, the contralto of the Hutchinson Family Quartet, renowned in New England, New York and England for their beautiful harmonies.

Flea Market

Trinity’s Annual Flea Market, located at 2119 Hartford Ave., will be held on Oct. 5 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Vendors are being sought to rent a 14-by-14 area for $20 to sell your yard sale, crafts or new items.

No food items or drinks are allowed and lunch will be for sale.

Pilgrim High School class of 2009 reunion

The class of 2009 from Pilgrim High School in Warwick will celebrate its 10-year reunion on Saturday, Oct. 12, from 7 to 11 p.m. at O’Rourkes Bar and Grill, 23 Peck Lane, Warwick.

Tickets cost $25 per person and must be purchased before Oct. 6 to guarantee entrance. Attendees are welcomed to bring a guest with the purchase of a separate ticket.

11th Holly Charette Motorcycle Run

The 11th annual Holly Charette Motorcycle Run will be held on Sunday, Sept. 29.

The ride will begin at the post office on Rolfe Square in Cranston and travel along scenic roads to the Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Exeter to honor Charette. The ride will then continue to Narragansett Town Beach before returning to the Crowne Plaza in Warwick for a dinner, raffles and the presentations of this year’s college scholarship recipients.

Charette, who joined the U.S. Marine Corps after Sept. 11, 2001, was 21 when her convoy was struck by a suicide bomber in Iraq in 2005. She was the first female Marine to lose her life during Operation Iraqi Freedom.

All proceeds from the event will benefit the Lance Cpl. Holly Charette Scholarship fund. This nonprofit organization was started in 2006 to remember and honor Charette. Each year, a student from Cranston High School East and Coventry High School receives a college scholarship in Charette’s name.

Registration begins at 8 a.m. and kickstands go up at 10 a.m. Tickets cost $30 a person and includes the ride, a T-shirt and dinner.

North Providence High class of 1964 reunion

North Providence High Schools class of 1964 will hold its 55th reunion on Sunday, Sept. 8, from 5-10 p.m. at Meenhan Overlook, located at 2 Governor Notte Parkway (off Douglas Avenue) in North Providence. The reunion will feature stations with American and international appetizers, a fabulous dinner buffet, music, dancing and much more. Mohr Library Genealogy Group Meetings

Marian J. Mohr Memorial Library hosts a Genealogy Group on the second Wednesday of each month at 4:30 p.m. The library has yearly subscriptions to Ancestry.com and New England Historical Genealogical Society databases (NEHGS) on all library computers.

The library also publishes a monthly newsletter outlining upcoming program details and includes tips for searching. Former programs include field trips to the State Archive and Swan Point Cemetery, as well as speakers on cemeteries, medallions found on gravestones, how to search for a nationality, and much more.

At the Mohr for children

Storytime has begun and offers stories, songs and rhymes for babies, toddlers and preschoolers and their caregivers. The program is held on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and is open to all ages. Storytime starts at 10:30 a.m. There is no need to register.

Saturday Drop-In Crafts are held when the Mohr Library is open. Come anytime between 11:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. for several self-directed projects for kids and parents to do together. Craft programs are not appropriate for children under 3 as small parts might present a hazard.

Lego Club meets every second Thursday of the month from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Play with Lego bricks donated by Lego Systems. Ages 5 and up. No registration required.

“I Spy” is held anytime when the library is open. Play “I Spy Pokmon,” “I Spy Pete the Cat” or three other “I Spy” games that a talented volunteer has made for you and get a sticker for each one. The program is open to all ages.

Free yoga for breast cancer survivors

The Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Foundation and Yoga at Studio Exhale offers yoga for breast cancer survivors every Sunday from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Yoga at Studio Exhale, 1263 Oaklawn Ave., Cranston, is the place to be to explore slow flow, gentle movement to create space in the body and eliminate stress. Fall Flea Market

The St. Rocco Church Flea Market will be held on Saturday, Oct. 19, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the back lot of the church. Come join in this fall as crowds hunt for their treasures. The event is sponsored by the St Rocco Women’s Guild.
