Wine & Dine Extravaganza for MS Dream Center

The MS Dream Center of Rhode Island and Accessible Rhode Island will host a Wine & Dine Extravaganza on Saturday, Sept. 21, at the Crowne Plaza in Warwick. Proceeds from the event will benefit the MS Dream Center, which is dedicated to supporting individuals with multiple sclerosis and other disabilities.

The event, sponsored by Bob Gasbarro’s Oaklawn Liquors, will include a wine and beer tasting along with a variety of food from some of Rhode Island’s best-known restaurants. The event will also include entertainment from the Ambrosiani Italian-American Band, raffles, a live auction, a 50/50 raffle and a mystery wine and dine pairing.

Johnston Police Explorers

Open to people between the ages of 14 and 20, the Johnston Police Explorers program provides a unique way to learn about law enforcement. The program is challenging and demanding, but also a fun learning experience.

A few areas in which the Explorers participate are firearms training, self-defense, traffic investigation, criminal investigation and community policing.

Author at the Mohr

On Monday, Sept. 16, the Mohr Library will host author Michael Fine at 6:30 p.m. Fine will present a reading from his debut novel “Abundance,” is a love story that travels from the streets of Rhode Island to the civil war in Liberia. To learn more, visit mohrlibrary.org.

Children’s programs at Mohr Library

On Tuesdays, Sept. 17 and Oct. 22, at 10:30 a.m., you can Sing-Along with Mr. Rowland and dance with shakers and sing along with family favorites and best loved children’s songs. The program is open to all ages with a grown-up.

On Tuesdays, Sept. 24 through Oct. 15, at 10:30 a.m. is Toddler Time, with stories, songs and fingerplay for babies and toddlers with a grown-up.

On Wednesdays, Sept. 18 through Oct. 16, at 10:30 a.m., enjoy Preschool Storytime. There will be stories, songs, puppets and fingerplay for children ages 2½ to 5 with a grown-up.

On Tuesday, Oct. 29, and Wednesday, Oct. 30, at 10:30 a.m., there will be Halloween Storytimes for babies, toddlers and preschoolers. Children are encouraged to come in costume and caregivers may bring snacks or drinks if they wish.

On Wednesday, Oct. 23 at 10:30 a.m., there will be Martial Arts for Tots. Sensei Dean from Rising Sun Jiu Jitsu will offer a free martial arts class for children ages 2½ to 5 with a grown-up.

Defenders of Animals yard sale

Defenders of Animals will hold its annual Community Yard Sale at the Edgewood Congregational Church, located at 1788 Broad St. in Cranston, on Sept. 28 from 8 a.m. to noon.

Scary Acres seeking actors, actresses

Scary Acres at Confreda Farms, located at 2150 Scituate Ave., is hiring actors and actresses to scare guests during its upcoming 17th season.

Pay begins at $10.50 per hour and applicants must be 18 years of age or older. Applicants must also have a valid government-issued ID and either a birth certificate or Social Security card.

All actors and actresses must be available on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights in September, through Oct. 6, from 6 p.m. until the closing time of 10 p.m. or longer. There will be paid training and rehearsals for all those who are hired.

Applicants may apply at Confreda Farms between the hours of 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., seven days a week. Positions are also available working at the kiosk at the front door.

Cranston East class of 1974 reunion

Cranston High School East’s class of 1974 will hold its 45th reunion on Friday, Oct. 4, at the Alpine Country Club, 251 Pippin Orchard Road, Cranston, beginning at 6 p.m. The cost is $65 per person, which includes a dinner buffet. Sacrament of Anointing to be held

The Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick and Elderly will be celebrated at St. Bartholomew Church, 297 Laurel Hill Ave. in Providence on Sept. 21 at 11:30 a.m. by Father Pranzo, Parochial Vicar of St. Bartholomew Parish.

Anyone whose health is seriously impaired by sickness or old age may receive the sacrament. This special Mass will be offered every third Saturday every other month. For more information, call 944-4466. Pray shawls will be available free of charge. Donations are appreciated. All are welcome.

Flea Market

Trinity’s Annual Flea Market, located at 2119 Hartford Ave. will be held on Oct. 5 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Vendors are being sought to rent a 14 by 14 area for $20 to sell your yard sale, crafts or new items.

No food items or drinks are allowed, and lunch will be for sale.

Pilgrim High School class of 2009 reunion

The class of 2009 from Pilgrim High School in Warwick will celebrate its 10-year reunion on Saturday, Oct. 12, from 6-10 p.m. at Chelo’s Waterfront Bar & Grille, 1 Masthead Drive, Warwick.

Tickets cost $25 per person and must be purchased before Oct. 6 to guarantee entrance. Attendees are welcomed to bring a guest with the purchase of a separate ticket.

11th Holly Charette Motorcycle Run

The 11th annual Holly Charette Motorcycle Run will be held on Sunday, Sept. 29.

The ride will begin at the post office on Rolfe Square in Cranston and travel along scenic roads to the Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Exeter to honor Charette. The ride will then continue to Narragansett Town Beach before returning to the Crowne Plaza in Warwick for a dinner, raffles and the presentations of this year’s college scholarship recipients.

Charette, who joined the U.S. Marine Corps after Sept. 11, 2001, was 21 when her convoy was struck by a suicide bomber in Iraq in 2005. She was the first female Marine to lose her life during Operation Iraqi Freedom.

All proceeds from the event will benefit the Lance Cpl. Holly Charette Scholarship fund. This nonprofit organization was started in 2006 to remember and honor Charette. Each year, a student from Cranston High School East and Coventry High School receives a college scholarship in Charette’s name.

Registration begins at 8 a.m. and kickstands go up at 10 a.m. Tickets cost $30 a person and includes the ride, a T-shirt and dinner.

North Providence High class of 1964 reunion

North Providence High School’s class of 1964 will hold its 55th reunion on Sunday, Sept. 8, from 5-10 p.m. at Meenhan Overlook, located at 2 Governor Notte Parkway (off Douglas Avenue) in North Providence. The reunion will feature stations with American and international appetizers, a fabulous dinner buffet, music, dancing and much more. St. Xavier class of 1969 reunion

St. Xavier Academy’s class of 1969 will celebrate its 50th reunion on Sunday, Oct. 20. Classes who graduated in years ending in 9 and 4 will be honored as well. At the Johnston Historical Society

The Johnston Historical Society’s museum barn is open Tuesdays, 9-11 a.m. and 6:30-8:30 p.m.; Thursdays, 2-5 p.m.; and the first and third Saturdays of each month, 9-11 a.m., for those who would like to visit the museum or examine the society’s collection of printed materials. Both the museum and Elijah Angell House continue to be open by appointment – they always welcome visits by interested individuals or groups. Steak Fry at VFW

A Steak Fry will be held from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 9, at the Kelley Gazzerro VFW Post 2812, 1418 Plainfield St., Cranston, with food provided by Spirito’s. The menu will additionally include salad, baked potatoes, mushrooms, onions, sweet corn, bread and butter, draft beer, soda and coffee.

Tickets cost $30 per person and must be purchased by Sept. 4. Tickets are only available in advance at the Kelley Gazzerro Post. Proceeds will benefit the post’s building fund.

Mohr Library Genealogy Group meetings

Marian J. Mohr Memorial Library hosts a Genealogy Group on the second Wednesday of each month at 4:30 p.m.

The library has yearly subscriptions to Ancestry.com and New England Historical Genealogical Society databases (NEHGS) on all library computers.

The library also publishes a monthly newsletter outlining upcoming program details and includes tips for searching. Former programs include field trips to the State Archive and Swan Point Cemetery, as well as speakers on cemeteries, medallions found on gravestones, how to search for a nationality, and much more.

Free yoga for breast cancer survivors

The Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Foundation and Yoga at Studio Exhale offers yoga for breast cancer survivors every Sunday from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Yoga at Studio Exhale, 1263 Oaklawn Ave., Cranston, is the place to be to explore slow flow, gentle movement to create space in the body and eliminate stress. Help make a house a home

The Furniture Bank of RI, a 501(C)3 non-profit corporation, needs bureaus, complete twin or double beds, kitchen sets, mattresses and other household furniture that you no longer need. To help a less fortunate family through your charitable donation of good used furniture, call 401-831-5511 to arrange for pick up. All donated articles must be in good condition.

Book sales

Members of the Friends of the Library plan and run book sales and carry out other fundraising activities to allow Mohr Library to increase services and programs. The Friends welcome new members who are willing to support either through donations, membership dues, or through volunteering their time. There is an ongoing book sale in the lower level hall across from the meeting room. The Friends also hold larger sales two or three times a year. Great selections at great prices include hard cover and paperback books, fiction and non-fiction, for adults, children, and young adults. Most prices range from $.25 to $2. The Friends are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, with proceeds from fundraising supporting library programs and services.

Donations of gently used books are appreciated and can be left at the library’s main desk during library hours. Receipts for tax purposes are available.
