Easter Party at Cherry Hill Manor

Cherry Hill Manor at 2 Cherry Hill Road in Johnston will host an Easter Party tomorrow, April 19, starting at 10:30 a.m.

The festivities will begin with bunnies and balloon sculptures by Brenner Family Magic Shows, followed by an Easter Egg Scavenger Hunt outdoors (weather permitting) or inside.

There will also be free pictures with the Easter Bunny from 1:30 to 3 p.m. and a hopping dance party with DJ Eddy from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Every child who attends will be entered into a raffle drawing.

Wine and Paint Night at JSC

The Johnston Senior Center, located at 1291 Hartford Ave., will host a Wine and Paint Night on Tuesday, April 30, at 5 p.m.

No prior painting experience is required, and the $20 cost of admission covers painting supplies, two glasses of wine and cheese and crackers.

Youth Fishing Derby

On April 27, the Johnston Parks and Recreation Department will host their Youth Fishing Derby from noon to 4 p.m. in the Johnston Memorial Park, located at 1583 Hartford Ave.

This is a free event and prizes will be awarded for individual achievement.

Fishing times for ages 4-7 will be held at noon to 1:30 p.m., and for ages 8-12 fishing time will be 2 to 3:30 p.m.

‘Be The Light’ for MAE Organization

MAE Organization For The Homeless, whose mission is to support and empower homeless and at-risk individuals through holistic healing programs for body, mind and spirit, will be hosting its fourth annual “Be The Light Gala” this month to benefit its programs and the opening of its Wellness Center.

The event will be held April 27 from 6-10 p.m. at the Park Theater, 848 Park Ave, Cranston. It will feature food from around the world, dancing and an auction with an array of items, including a trip to Portugal.

Tickets cost $80 and can be purchased on Eventbrite, by visiting maeorg.org or by calling founder and CEO Martinha Javid at 206-1451.

Easter Bunny at Confreda Farms

Confreda Greenhouses & Farms, located at 2150 Scituate Ave., Cranston, will host its annual Easter Bunny visit on April 20 from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. For more information, visit confredafarms.com.

School vacation week at the Mohr Library

On Thursday, April 18, at 6:30 p.m., there will be a magic show. Malik Haddadi will entertain the whole family with an exciting audience participation magic show. Free tickets will be available starting on April 15. This program is sponsored by the Friends of Mohr Library.

Storytime, which features stories, songs and rhymes for kids and their caregivers, will start on April 23 and run through May 29.

Tag Sale for Historical Society

The Johnston Historical Society will hold its Tag Sale on May 4 from 8 a.m. to noon at the society’s headquarters, 101 Putnam Pike, Johnston. The society is also accepting donations of items for the sale. A detailed listing of the available items will be posted to Craigslist under “garage sales” the week of the sale. Proceeds will benefit the Johnston Historical Society.

Genealogy Group meetings

The Marian J. Mohr Memorial Library hosts a Genealogy Group on the second Wednesday of each month at 4:30 p.m. The Library has yearly subscriptions to Ancestry.com and New England Historical Genealogical Society databases on all library computers.

The library also publishes a monthly newsletter outlining upcoming program details and includes tips for searching. Former programs include field trips to the State Archives and Swan Point Cemetery, as well as speakers on cemeteries, medallions found on gravestones, how to search for a nationality, and much more.

Programs and more at Mohr

The Marian J. Mohr Memorial Library, located at 1 Memorial Ave. in Johnston, has announced both Children’s Events and Vacation events.

Their Lego Club is held every second Thursday of the month through June from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. They have more than 10,000 LEGO bricks donated by LEGO Systems.

Saturday Family Crafts is held every weekend through June. Drop in anytime between 11:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. and enjoy several self-directed projects for kids and parents to do together. There is no need to register and this is not appropriate for children under 3 as small parts might present a hazard.

Johnston Historical Society

The Johnston Historical Society’s museum barn is open Tuesdays from 9 to 11 a.m. and 6:30-8:30 p.m., Thursdays from 2-5 p.m., or by appointment for those who would like to visit the museum or examine the society’s collection of printed materials. Just in case, call ahead to confirm they are there.

Society dues cost $20 per year for an individual and $30 per year for a family (two adults and children under 18) membership. The purpose of the Johnston Historical Society is to identify, preserve and promote the history of the town. It is located at 101 Putnam Pike in Johnston and can be reached by calling 231-3380.

Book Sales

Members of the Friends of the Mohr Library plan and run book sales and carry out other fundraising activities to allow the Marian J. Mohr Memorial Library to increase services and programs. The Friends welcome new members who are willing to support either through donations, membership dues, or through volunteering their time. To find out more, contact them, or call the library director at 231-4980 (press 7).

There is an ongoing book sale in the lower level hall across from the meeting room. The Friends also hold larger sales two or three times a year. Great selections at great prices include hard cover and paperback books, fiction and non-fiction, for adults, children, and young adults. Most prices range from $.25 to $2. The Friends are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, with proceeds from fundraising supporting library programs and services.

Donations of gently used books are appreciated and can be left at the library's main desk during library hours. Receipts for tax purposes are available.
