Did You Know?

Victory Day, also known as VJ Day, is an annual state holiday celebrated on the second Monday in August in Rhode Island in the United States. It marks the anniversary of the Allies’ victory over Japan during World War II. This year it falls on August 13. At one point in time, VJ Day celebrations were prevalent across the United States. However, many of them have now fallen out of favor due to the perception that these celebrations might be offensive to Japan – who is now an ally of the United States – or to Japanese Americans. There are places however, where parades and other activities are still held every year on this date. This includes Rhode Island where it is a State, not Federal, holiday. (Source: VJ Day Facts)
