Summer At the Mohr

Jiu-Jitsu Self Defense Workshop with Dean Watts will be held on July 10 at 2 to 3 p.m. at the Mohr Library featuring a fun, energetic intro to self-defense. This is a hands-on, active showcase that will help teens learn skills that will boost their confidence and discipline. 20 spaces available. Memory of Andrew Greene - National Summer Learning Day will be held at the Mohr on July 12 from 1:30 to 4 p.m. Do you have summer reading assigned for school that you need to work on? Drop everything and read with us in the teen room. The teen room will be a designated a quiet room for the day, so all can motivate each other to get some reading done together while enjoying snacks.

Open Mic Talent Show and Coffeehouse will be held on Aug. 7 from 2 to 4 p.m. Do you like to perform? Sing or share a song, play an instrument, lip sync, dance, tell a joke, read a poem, juggle, impress us with magic tricks? Or maybe you just want to sit back, relax and enjoy a coffee while watching local performers. Circus Dynamics Variety Show and Workshop will be held on Aug. 20 from 2 to 3 p.m. Maurice & Acacia of Circus Dynamics perform an energetic, audience interactive, and highly skilled circus variety show. Full of laughs and incredible tricks, come and witness gravity-defying juggling, incredible hula-hoop manipulations, hat tricks, flag spinning, and more. After the performance Circus Dynamics will teach a hands-on Circus Workshop where teens will have the opportunity to try their hands at juggling, hula-hooping, and flag spinning. 20 spaces available. Teen Arts and Crafts Club will meet every Thursday from 2 to 3 p.m. Love arts & crafts? Join in each week to make something new and express yourself. They will paint, collage, draw, sculpt, and use paper, textiles, natural objects and recyclables to create all different works to take home. Each week make something new. 20 spaces available. Teen Dungeons and Dragons Club will be held every Friday from 3 to 6 p.m. Dungeons & Dragons for Teens is a cooperative role-playing game recently made famous again in Stranger Things. Teens create their own characters and play out a story together. They will be beginning a new storyline called Storm King’s Thunder, where adventurers battle giants. Teen Chess Club will meet every Wednesday from 2 to 3 p.m. at the Mohr.  Join them for the classic strategy game Chess. Battle your friends or test your wits against the librarian. Don’t know how to play? No problem they can teach you. The rules are simple, the opportunities endless. Practice all your strategies here while relaxing away from the heat. 20 spaces available. Mohr Summer Reading Registration

Registration is now underway for the Mohr Library Summer Reading Registration. Children up to age 12 years old can sign up for the program.

Children who complete their reading log by reading or listening to books, e-books, magazines, graphic novels or audiobooks throughout the summer and attending library programs will receive: a free book, 10 raffle tickets, an ice cream party invitation and a variety of incentive coupons like free or reduced admission to the Providence Children’s Museum, Roger Williams Park Zoo, and other attraction along with a Certificate of Completion.The deadline for submitting completed reading logs is Wednesday, Aug. 1.

Johnston Historical Society

The Johnston Historical Society’s Museum Barn is open Tuesdays from 9 to 11 a.m. and 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.; Thursdays, 2 to 5 p.m.; or by appointment, for those who would like to visit the museum or examine the society’s collection of printed materials. Just in case, call ahead to confirm they are there.

Dues are $20 per year for an individual, $30 per year for a family (two adults and children under 18) membership. The purpose of the JHS is to identify, preserve and promote the history of our town. It is located at 101 Putnam Pike in Johnston and can be reached by calling 231-3380.
