RI State Business After Hours

On March 27, the Rhode Island Statewide Business After Hours will be held at Rhodes On the Pawtuxet, 60 Rhodes Place in Cranston, from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Expand your business network at this annual statewide event which includes participants from more than 12 area Chambers of Commerce. Upwards of 800 business professionals are expected to attend. The event will feature 125 table-top displays, cash bar, delectable hors d’oeuvres provided by Russell Morin Catering & Events and all that Rhodes on the Pawtuxet has to offer. Admission is $15 per person. For more information, contact your local Chamber of Commerce.

Gentian Garden Club News

The Gentian Garden Club meeting will be held March 20 at 7 p.m. The location is the North Scituate Community House, 546 West Greenville Rd., North Scituate. They welcome visitors at all meetings and hope that you will love what you see and want to become a member of the club.

Their March 20 program is “A Look Inside Historical Prescott Farm Gardens” by URI Master Gardener Betsy McClintock.  Prescott Farm is a colonial farm site located in Middletown. The farm shows early American history in a charming country setting featuring an 1812 windmill, historic buildings, gardens and walking trails. The Newport Restoration Foundation, founded by Doris Duke, offers many programs throughout the year at Prescott Farm that Betsy will be telling you all about. She volunteers Sunday mornings from April 1 through Nov. 1 at Prescott Farm to work in its veggie gardens.

Also, on March 24, weather permitting, they will be cleaning up the North Scituate barrels on the Village Green, Community House window boxes and the containers at the North Scituate Post Office and the Tyler Library in Foster.

A special day at the Mohr Library

Spring & Easter Crafts plus Legos will be held on Thursday, March 29 from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. as Johnston Public Schools are closed Professional Development. Stop by the Mohr Library for crafts and Legos. Crafts programs feature several self-directed projects for kids and parents to do together. No need to register.  Drop-in anytime during the program.  (Craft Programs and Legos are not appropriate for children under 3 as small parts may present a hazard.)

Special raffle at St. Brigid’s Church

St. Brigid’s Church, 1231 Plainfield S. in Johnston, 20 Week Committee is sponsoring a Special Raffle that will be drawn at their luncheon on April 22 at the Alpine Country Club in Cranston. 1st Prize: $500 gift certificate to Target; 2nd prize: Framed Patriots Picture (value $200); 3rd Prize: $150 Gift Card to Spirito’s Restaurant in Providence; 4th Prize: $100 Gift Card to Stop and Shop and 5th Prize: $100 Gift Card to Stop & Shop. Prizes total over $1,000.

Easter Bunny coming to Johnston Senior Center

The Easter Bunny will be at the Johnston Senior Center on March 31 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Gifts will be handed out to each child, as well as refreshments served. Please bring a camera to take pictures. This is a free event. Breakfast with the Easter Bunny, hosted by Johnston Parks and Recreation Department will be held during this time. The Johnston Senior Center is located at 1291 Hartford Ave., Johnston.

Zumba for animals

Zumbathon Animal Welfare a 90-minute Charity Event is scheduled for March 25 at the Johnston Indoor Recreation Center, 1741 Atwood Ave.to benefit The Humane Society US and ASPCA. To participate, entry purchases can be made in-person at the Recreation Center (call ahead at 437-6326) or send email to feedback4roberta@yahoo.com. At the Mohr

Join in for Geronimo Stilton and Mouse Fun (Ages K and up) on March 28t at 6:30 p.m. Mouse Trap Board Game, Newspaper Scavenger Hunt, Cheese Pyramid Building Challenge. Marian J. Mohr Memorial Library is located at 1 Memorial Ave, Johnston and can be reached by calling 231-4980 x5. March 21 at 6:30 pm (Grades K-3) Dragons. Stories, make a Coat of Arms, go on a Dragon Hunt, Activities & Crafts. 

Storytime – stories, songs and rhymes for all ages will be held on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m. March 13th to April 11. Kids of all ages and their caregivers are welcome.

On March 22, Child’s Play: A Brief History of the Children of New England, will be presented at the Mohr Library, at 6 p.m. Geralyn Ducady of the Rhode Island Historical Society will lead you through the history of Children’s play in colonial New England through the present day. She will discuss how adults influenced and attempted to direct play based on the beliefs of the times, their attempts to contain play, and how children formed their own ideas of what play should be. She will also look at the use of commercial toys versus non-commercial “toys;” objects that are not toys being used in play. Perhaps you will find something familiar from your own youth and can share your memories of play. Free and open to the public. Register by emailing info@mohrlibrary.org or calling 231-4980.

Lego Club meets every second Thursday of the month through June from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Come play with their 10, 000 LEGO bricks donated by LEGO Systems on April 12, May 10 and June 14. Ages 5 and up with a caregiver. No need to register.

Stations of the Cross

St. Brigid’s Church, 1231 Plainfield Street, Johnston, will be having their Stations of the Cross every Friday during Lent at 3 p.m. Their annual Living Stations of the Cross will be presented by the Junior High School students and Confirmation Candidates on Good Friday, March 30, at 3 p.m. All are invited.

Ongoing Book Sale at the Mohr

Looking for a book to relax with? You’ll find more than a few at the Friends of Mohr Library’s ongoing book sale. The friendly bookshelves in the hallway on the lower level of the library have been filled with lots of gently used books for sale, thanks to recent donations from local book lovers. Open daily during regular library hours, you can find something for everyone - children, young adults, and lovers of mystery, romance, science fiction, sports, biography, cookbooks, etc.

The Friends, a non-profit volunteer group dedicated to the library, helps to support special services and library programs through memberships, donations, and fundraising efforts. Email address is friends@mohrlibrary.com.
