Solar Eclipse 2017

The Marian J. Mohr Memorial Library will host the Celestial Event of the Century between 1:30 to 4 p.m. On Monday, Aug. 21 there will be an eclipse of the sun passing across the United States. A solar eclipse occurs when the moon completely covers the sun. While Rhode Island is not on the path of totality, we will be able to see a partial eclipse during the afternoon. Throughout the eclipse we will be celebrating with fun STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, & Math) activities, projects & crafts. We will have drop in activities that you can do on your own throughout the day along with scheduled activities (registration required for scheduled activities.)

Looking for Crafters

Spring Green Memorial Church is looking for Crafters to participate in an Indoor/Outdoor Craft and Yard Sale to be held on Saturday, Sept. 9 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tables and spaces are available for a donation of $25 each. (There is limited space inside.) For those interested or for more information, please contact the church office Tuesday through Friday, 9 a.m. to noon at 401-463-8328 to make your reservation. Spring Green Church is located at 1350 Warwick Ave. in Warwick.

St. Brigid’s Italian Festival

The Social Ministry of St. Brigid's Church, 1231 Plainfield St., will be sponsoring their Italian Festival on Sept. 24 at noon in the church hall. Tickets will be going on sale in the foyer of the church beginning the weekend of Aug. 26. Ticket prices are $25 per person and children 6 to 10 are $10; children 5 and under are free. A full course Italian dinner is being donated by the popular Marchetti's Restaurant in Cranston along with a wine toast and home-made desserts by the ministry. Job Training for Community Kitchen Program

The Rhode Island Community Food Bank is now accepting applications for its free, 14-week Community Kitchen Program, a culinary job training program for adults 18 years and older.  Beginning in September, the program prepares participants for entry-level jobs in the restaurant and food service industry through training in basic cooking skills, food service operations, ServSafe procedures, first aid, safety and life skills.

Students also participate in unpaid internships to expand their skills and help prepare them for permanent employment. Graduates receive a certificate for completing 400 hours of training. Assistance in job placement is provided.

Help make a house a home

The Furniture Bank of RI, a 501(C)3 non-profit corporation, needs bureaus, complete twin or double beds, kitchen sets, mattresses and other household furniture that you no longer need. To help a less fortunate family through your charitable donation of good used furniture, call 831-5511 to arrange for pick up. All donated articles must be in good condition.

New members welcome to West Bay Chorale

The West Bay Chorale will begin rehearsals on Sept. 11. At this time, we welcome any new members who are interested in joining our singing group.  No auditions necessary.  If you have the love for music and are looking to share that talent, then The West Bay Chorale is the place to be. Volunteers needed

The Johnston Senior Center is seeking volunteers to help with various services throughout the year. They need volunteers on Thursday afternoon bingo and Friday night bingo. The Activity Department is also in need of volunteers for dining room servers and gift shop associates. Contact the Center at 944-3343.

Stretch Strong to the Core

Tamburini Golf Performance will present “Stretch Strong to the Core” on Sundays at 10 a.m. at Tamburini Golf Performance Center, 100 Federal Way in Johnston.  Flexibility, mobility, strength, endurance and balance will all be taught during “Stretch Strong to the Core” will improve your total body flexibility, address mobility, strengthen your core and balance to enhance your overall functional fitness and golf performance.

Consistent stretching will allow you to have a more efficient swing, maximize on spinal rotation, produce more power, reach a greater distance with each drive and most importantly minimize the risk of injury. All levels are welcome, dress in comfortable clothing, bring a mat and water bottle with you. Yard Sale to benefit Defenders of Animals

A large yard sale will be held at the Warwick Animal Hospital on Aug. 26, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Warwick Animal Hospital (back parking lot), 1950 Elmwood Ave., Warwick. Proceeds to benefit Defenders of Animals.

Defenders of Animals and the Warwick Animal Hospital work together assisting pet owners and stray animals with medical emergencies and routine medical care. When funds are available, Defenders of Animals will assist pet owners financially when they can’t afford medical treatment or their pets.
