Bowl-A-Thon to benefit animals

 

Sponsored by Defenders of Animals, a Bowl-A-Thon will be held on July 23 from 2 to 4 p.m. which includes two hours of bowling at Town Hall Lanes, 1463 Atwood Ave. in Johnston. The fee is $20 per person, which includes a pizza and a pitcher of soda for each lane. Call Defenders of Animals for reservations at 461-1922 or send an email to defendersofanimals@msn.com.

St. Brigid’s Cabaret

St. Brigid’s Church, 1231 Plainfield St., Johnston, is having a Cabaret Fun{d} Raiser on June 23 at the Santa Maria Hall, 31 Walnut Grove Ave., in Cranston at 6:30 p.m. with appetizer stations by “RALPH’S”.  Tickets will be on sale in the foyer of the church prior and after the Saturday 5 p.m.  Mass and Sundays at the 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. Masses beginning May 13-14. Featured will be the popular tribute artist Michael Panarello with his famous interpretation of Frankie Valli. No tickets will be sold at the door. For information call 942-0576.

Fundraiser for American Cancer Society

On June 29 at 6:30 p.m. at the Santa Maria Di Prata Society in Cranston will help raise funds for the American Cancer Society. Tickets are $50 and include dinner by Ralph’s Catering located in Cranston and the show by Charlie Hall and the Ocean State Follies. No tickets will be sold at the door. Come meet Ariel – the pig

On June 24, visit with Ariel from the Smith 7 Agli’s Potbelly Manor Pet Assisted Therapy program from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. This event is being held by Defenders of Animals at Pet Supplies located in Garden City Center in Cranston.

Ride 4 Hope

The 2017 Ride 4 Hope Motorcycle Ride to benefit the RI Dream Center will be on June 24 with a rain date of June 25. Registration will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. at the cost of $25 per person. Registration includes free Ride T-Shirt and food. Registration and run starts at Thirsty Beaver, 288 Atwood Ave. in Cranston and will end at Ocean State Harley Davidson at 35 Albany Rd. in Warwick. Greater Providence YMCA 1st Summer Travel Basketball League

Every Wednesday night beginning July 12 through Aug. 16, the Greater Providence YMCA will run a summer travel basketball league. Games will tip off at 6:30 p.m. and 7:45 p.m. This travel league will feature a game on Wednesday nights. Players will be traveling between Kent County, Bayside, Newman, and Cranston YMCA. The league is open to boys and girls entering grades 1 through 8 and all players will be divided into divisions based on the grade they are entering in the fall. At the Mohr Library

Register for Summer Reading, enjoy several self-directed craft projects for children and parents to do together, play with thousands of LEGO bricks, and go on a scavenger hunt. This will be held on June 26 at 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.; June 27 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and June 28 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Geared for ages 4 and up with a grown up. The Summer Reading Program is supported by the R.I. Office of Library and Information Services with funds from the Institute of Museum and Library Services and the Friends of Mohr Library.

The Magic Show on June 26 with the Great Baldini. Join the Great Baldini and his assistant Skinny, who will take you on a magical journey at 6:30 p.m. Free tickets will be available on June 26 on a first come, first serve basis. This program is sponsored by a Legislative Grant provided by Senator Frank Lombardo III.

On June 29 at 11 a.m. “Let’s Grow!” will be held at the Mohr. Become familiar with the lifecycle and parts of a plant through stories and hands on activities of sorting and identifying parts of real plants. Participate in Supermarket Botany! Start a real plant with seeds here at the library to take home, care for and grow. Registration preferred.

Learn about Leonardo da Vinci and make a Camera Obscura on July 6 at 11 a.m. at the Mohr Library.  Let’s turn your view of the world upside down! Leonardo was the first person to connect the way this type of camera worked with the way the human eye worked. Registration preferred.

On Thursday July 13 at 11 a.m. will be Balloons, Planes, Achievements in Flight- stories and activities about the first international flight by balloon, interesting first attempts at flight, The Wrights, The Granville Brothers (GeeBees) and creativity surrounding such endeavors. There will be flight inspired crafts. Registration preferred.

On July 27 at 11 a.m. will feature on Da Vinci’s Sense of Humor! Yes, he had sense of humor and engaged in practical jokes on friends, jokes and puzzles. In that spirit, come discover Leonardo da Vinci’s not too well-known side with jokes, puzzles and make a floating animal or invisible ink! Registration preferred.

On Aug. 3 at 11 a.m. there will be a program with family and siblings, Welcome, featuring Georgia O’Keeffe Tissue Paper Collages-Create a Georgia O’Keeffe inspired tissue paper collage. Learn how to employ balance, depth and cropping into this art. Registration required.

Apprenticeship Program

The Operating Engineers Local 57 will be accepting applications for their Apprenticeship Program on June 19 through June 30 from 9 a.m. to noon at 873 Central Ave. in Johnston. The requirements are the you must be at least 18 years old with a High School Diploma or GED and a valid driver’s license. You will also need to bring your birth certificate (copy or original) and your Social Security Car. Three letters of reference are also asked for (from non-family members) and you must apply in person.

Friends of the Mohr Public Library

Members of the Friends plan and run book sales and carry out other fundraising activities to allow Mohr Library to increase services and programs. The Friends welcome new members who are willing to support either through donations, membership dues, or through volunteering their time. To find out more, contact them, or call the library director at 231-4980 (press 7).

There is an ongoing book sale in the lower level hall across from the meeting room. The Friends also hold larger sales two or three times a year. Great selections at great prices include hard cover and paperback books, fiction and non-fiction, for adults, children, and young adults. Most prices range from 25 cents to $2. The Friends are a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization, with proceeds from fundraising supporting library programs and services.

Donations of gently used books are appreciated, and can be left at the library’s main desk during library hours. Receipts for tax purposes are available.

Free Pet Food

Bonniedale Farm in North Scituate offers dog and cat food at no cost to struggling pet owners, hoping to provide for the animals while easing the burden on community members facing tough times. Those wishing to donate or in need of pet food can contact Dan MacKenzie at 401-574-6056. The mailing address for the farm is 1097 Chopmist Hill Road, North Scituate, RI 02857, while the physical address is 1056 Danielson Pike, North Scituate. Volunteers needed

The Johnston Senior Center is seeking volunteers to help with various services throughout the year. They need volunteers on Thursday afternoon bingo and Friday night bingo. The Activity Department is also in need of volunteers for dining room servers and gift shop associates. Contact the Center at 944-3343.
