Spring sports season set to get underway

Posted

It’s that time of the year again! Johnston High School spring sports are here. Our spring sport teams include boys’ volleyball, girls’ softball, boys’ baseball, girls’ lacrosse, boys’ lacrosse and track.

Last year, the boys’ volleyball team was a school club. This year will be the first year it is a competing school team. After hard practice last year, it is ready to display its talents and earn some wins.

Our girls’ softball team made it to semifinals last season, and it’s hoping for an even better outcome this year. The team is ready to display its many talented players and have an unforgettable season. The boys’ baseball team was led by captain and ace pitcher, Zack Clesas, in the team’s past season. This year, Clesas will be returning and is hoping to help lead the team to multiple wins and a playoff victories.

Our girls’ lacrosse team won its first championship last season. This was a huge accomplishment for the team, which has only been a team at the school for a few years. The players have described the win as a “team effort” and are hoping for similar results this season. They will be playing their hearts out on the field, fighting for a second title and back-to-back championships.

The boys’ lacrosse team, which is also a new edition to the school’s sports lineup, will be joining Division III after last year’s successful season. It is hungry for a championship win and is ready to pour its heart out on the field.

Lastly, our track and field teams were led by many athletes last year, including stars Elijah Burgess, Ben Budway and James Baccala. Some of the events include the long jump, sprints, hurdles, relays, pole vaults, javelin throw and many more. This team is one of the biggest teams at JHS and its members have many diverse talents to offer.

All of our teams’ athletes are extremely talented and will shine on the fields and courts this season. We are looking forward to a great season of spring sports. We also wish everyone the best of luck and encourage any student who is interested to try out for the teams. Good luck to all.
