Senior Center ready to celebrate St. Pat, St. Joe

Anthony “Tony” Zompa, who serves as Executive Director of the Johnston Senior Center (JSC), was thinking past the weather forecasters that predicted a late-winter blizzard when he recently announced that the popular sport of bocce will be back soon.

“This is one of our favorite activities,” said Zompa. “If you’re not already on one of our leagues and would like to join, just come in and sign up with our Program Coordinator Ellen Trementozzi. We are hoping to begin play in April, depending up the weather.”

Zompa also issued “a friendly reminder for people that don’t know we have a food closet. If you or someone you know is in need, please call us and ask for Millie (Santilli) or Denise (Bell); they can and will help.”

Zompa also emphasized that those who plan on attending the annual St. Patrick’s Day Party or the St. Joseph’s Day celebration could help boost the JSC’s Food Closet stock by bringing a non-perishable food item to either or both functions.

“March is also nutrition month,” Zompa said. “We have plenty of nutrition literature and recipes in our lobby. All those things come in once a month and are complimentary from the ongoing University of Rhode Island Nutrition Program. We have a collection container on site and welcome any and all donations.”

In regards to tomorrow’s St. Joseph’s Day Party, Zompa announced that Janine Andrews – one of the JSC’s most popular entertainers – will be at the JSC for the All-Irish event that’s scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. and continue until the corned beef and cabbage lunch is finished. The St. Joseph’s Day Party will also begin at 11 a.m. Monday morning and the always-popular Zeppole’s will be served as the day’s dessert.

SPECIAL ENROLLMENT

Zompa also wanted it known that Medicare has special enrollment periods, or “SEPs,” that allow a person to leave their Medicare Advantage plan or part D Prescription Drug Plan and enroll in a different plan, even if it is not during the annual open enrollment period.

Zompa urged those who have problems with their Medicare Advantage or Plan B Prescription coverage to call 1-800-Medicare and explain their situation.
