Coaches of the Year

During last Sunday’s 34th Rhode Island Academic Decathlon competition, Johnston Academic Decathlon Coaches Kerry Murphy (left) and Debra Smyth, both teachers at Johnston High School, received the Augustine Capotosto Jr. Award. The yearly prize recognizes coaches who encourage their students to delve into the contest’s annual theme while broadening their horizons and opportunities as well as their knowledge. The coaches were honored for inspiring life-long learning skills, encouraging peer mentoring and leadership, and finding creative ways to engage with the Decathlon study materials. Over the course of the school year, students on the Decathlon team took trips to museums and restaurants, and travelled to New York to the Museum of Jewish Heritage. The Decathlon board of directors selected Murphy and Smyth for their dedication to Johnston High School and the enthusiasm and creativity they bring to the Rhode Island Academic Decathlon.
