RI Film Festival short films shine

Posted

The Rhode Island International Film Festival is the only festival in the Northeast that qualifies short films for consideration for the Academy Awards.

Last week, we viewed over 80 short films and three feature length films, spending eight- to 11-hour days in dark theatres at the Vets Auditorium and RISD’s Metcalf Auditorium. We’ve been attending the festival for years now, and it has come a long way in its organization and quality of the films.

This year we were fortunate to catch the winners for animated, documentary and short film categories. We would not be surprised to see one of them win an Oscar.

Unfortunately, these excellent films do not get the credit they deserve, although many are now showing up on special television channels. One of our favorites was “Lily & Mara” by Newport native Caroline Roberts, a native of Newport who has gone on to work on films with Johnny Depp and is now involved in the much-anticipated “Mary Poppins Returns,” due out next year.
