Rhode Island Beekeepers Association offers beginner course

The Rhode Island Beekeepers Association will be offering a five-week course at the University of Rhode Island and Rhode Island College that will cover information about beekeeping for beginners.

The subjects that will be covered include the honeybee life cycle, choosing an appropriate site, buying bees and equipment, assembly of the hive, installing package bees, catching swarms, nectar sources, bee diseases and pests, hive inspections and preparing bees for the winter. During the class, a variety of equipment will be on display and demonstrated.

The cost of the course is $65 per person and will cover all necessary course materials and membership dues for the Rhode Island Beekeepers Association until Dec. 31. Additional family members can share course materials for $10 each.

Classes at Rhode Island College will be taught by Betty Menucci and will be held on Jan. 25 and 26, as well as Feb. 1, 2, 8, 9, 15, 16, 22 and 23. Classes at the University of Rhode Island will be taught by Steve Burke and will be held on Feb. 7, 9, 14, 16, 21, 23 and 28, as well as March 2, 7 and 9.

Classroom space is limited, and advanced registration is required. To register, interested persons can either visit the Rhode Island Beekeepers Association website and click on the link for bee school, or a completed registration form with an attached check or money order can be mailed to P.O. Box 685, Glendale, Rhode Island, 02826. A confirmation email will be sent shortly after your registration is received.
