SHOPLIFTING

Patrolman Adam M. Parkinson responded to Burlington Coat Factory at 1386 Atwood Ave. the morning of Dec. 22 in response to a report of shoplifting.
Parkinson met with the loss prevention officer upon arrival, who advised that several minutes earlier he witnessed a female suspect – identified as Nairoby Depena, 36, 7 Magalene St., Providence – milling about the store with a full carriage. Parkinson said the officer immediately recognized Depena from a previous shoplifting incident on Oct. 27, when JPD responded and Depena was trespassed from the business.
The loss prevention officer said that the suspect attempted to appear nonchalant, and she “ducked down an aisle and picked up her cell phone pretending to talk to someone about pizza.” He said that he went to the back of the store to reference his laptop and previous trespass report he took from the aforementioned date, at which time the suspect made her way to the front entrance, forgoing all points of purchase and setting off the alarm with clothes still tagged with theft sensors.
Parkinson said the reporting party told him Depena began quickly consolidating her carriaged items in the front vestibule and walked hurriedly through the parking lot toward Atwood Avenue. The reporting party said that, by the time he arrived at the front entrance, she was halfway across the parking lot.
While en route to headquarters, Parkinson said he was contacted by an off-duty JPD officer who advised that Depena was observed loitering inside the Eastside Shell Station at 1496 Hartford Ave. Parkinson responded inside the business where he made contact with Nairoby, who perfectly matched the suspect’s description.
She was placed under arrest, and though Parkinson said she was repeatedly instructed to place her hands behind her back, she refused to comply and he was forced to employ a minimal amount of force as she was overpowered and secured in handcuffs. He said she was not injured during the minor struggle.
Parkinson said he observed a large assortment of clothing bearing Burlington Coat Factory tags and some still bearing sensors. Parkinson said Nairoby could not produce a receipt for the clothing in her possession.
Nairoby was arrested on a charge of felony shoplifting and misdemeanor counts of habitual offender due to multiple previous shoplifting/larceny convictions, willful trespass and a warrant for failure to appear for pretrial stemming from a larceny arrest out of the Providence Police Department.
Nairoby was arraigned and had bail set at $1,000 with surety with a Kent County District Court date of Jan. 6. Depena was held without bail as a bail isolator and transported to the ACI women intake facility with a pending rearraignment date of Dec. 23.

MULTIPLE CHARGES

On Dec. 12, Detective Seth D. Crosby began investigating a case of larceny of packages from a party whose name has been redacted from reports.
Crosby said the video footage obtained via a Ring doorbell was posted to the JPD’s Facebook page as part of a request for assistance in identifying the suspect. He responded to a redacted address to speak with a victim who did not wish to pursue a criminal complaint. Crosby spoke with another person who stated that she had just observed the suspects parking on Waveland Street.
The woman was sure it was the vehicle involved because it was missing a front passenger side hubcap. She was able to obtain pictures of the vehicle, license plate and occupants before scaring them away, yelling, “I know you stole my packages.”
A check with cross agency revealed a common operator known as Marco Russo, 20, 107A Cucumber Hill Road, Foster. The names of his passengers were redacted. Crosby said he positively identified Russo as the operator of the suspect vehicle. He responded to Leading Street in an effort to speak with a person whose name was redacted, but there was no response – but an Amazon package addressed to a redacted location in Johnston was protruding from the trash can.
Foster Police later made contact with Russo, who volunteered to come back to headquarters with Crosby. He said Russo admitted to driving the vehicle of the past three months, and driving around a neighborhood stealing packages on Dec. 11. He said that he and the others stole approximately 10 packages from six different houses. When shown the video surveillance, Russo confirmed that was his vehicle.
Russo was charged with conspiracy and released with a Third Division District Court summons to appear on Jan. 6.
A few days later, suspect Michael L. Schultz Jr., 18, 418 Carpenter Road, Hope, responded to JPD headquarters, where he was escorted to the detective division and advised of his rights. Detective Thomas M. Dwyer said he conducted the interview with Detective Michael Edwards. Schultz said he received a text message from his friend on Dec. 17 that he was caught “porch pirating” multiple times on video surveillance and that he should turn himself in at the Johnston Police Department.
Schultz said that he personally got out of Russo’s vehicle on two or three occasions to steal packages. Schultz was charged with larceny under $1,500 and conspiracy.

WARRANT

Patrolman Matthew V. Leveillee and several other officers responded to Plainfield Street on the afternoon of Dec. 16 in reference to a disturbance.
The only party of the three involved whose name was not redacted from reports was Disaree Trinity Suarez, 18, 28 Cross St., Central Falls. After speaking with all parties on the scene, Leveillee determined that a verbal argument had ensued when a redacted party arrived at the residence in the morning to discover Suarez there. Both women claimed that a man whose name was redacted was their current boyfriend, while the redacted woman said that she normally lives with him at Plainfield Street. Leveillee said there were no signs of a physical altercation and no allegations of assault were made.
Procedural checks revealed Suarez had an active arrest warrant from the Pawtucket Police Department for vandalism/property damage. Leveillee said Suarez was taken into custody without incident.
