Panthers set for 2nd annual golf tourney

Football is back in the sports spotlight at Johnston High School.

It comes in form of the 2nd Annual JHS Panther Grid Iron Golf Tournament that will tee off on Sunday, June 22 at Triggs Memorial Golf Course that’s located at 1533 Chalkstone Avenue in Providence.

The tournament, which is designed to create and promote interest in the football program at JHS as well as raise revenue for what Chairman Brandon Parillo called “extras” that the annual budget doesn’t include.

“We’re calling all Panthers … guys have played here on Cherry Hill during their undergraduate days,” Parillo, who is the Panthers’ offensive coordinator, added. “What would be super is if we could get a foursome from each class that played their high school football at JHS.”

Entry fee is only $100 – the same as last year as Parillo pointed out, “and for that you get 18 holes of golf, a cart and delicious dinner right after the golf is complete.”

Parillo also announced that this year’s post-tourney dinner, which was a huge hit a year ago and resembled a Panther football reunion, will be Triggs’ famed and deluxe barbecue consisting of salad, cornbread, teriyaki, chicken, baby back ribs, baked potato and beans.”

For those non-golfers or JHS alums who’d like to only attend the dinner, tickets are priced at $35 each. The organizing committee is also selling sponsorship tee signs at $100 with all proceeds from the June 22 event going directly to the Panthers Grid Iron Club.

Parillo also announced that there will be a hole-in-one contest and the committee will be selling $20 mulligans for each foursome. The scramble, best-ball format will e used for scoring.

“We’re hoping for great weather and a great field,” Parillo added. “The more golfers that turn out, the more we can do for the student-athletes who’ll represent JHS in the 2019 Rhode Island Interscholastic League season.”

Joe Acciardo, the Panthers’ head coach, this week heaped words of praise upon Parillo, who he coached in 2008 and led JHS to the Super Bowl Championship.

“This tournament was Brandon’s idea and his family was totally suipportier last year and worked the event,” Acciardo went on. “I’m excited … it’s almost like we’re getting ready to kick off the season … This (golf) tourney is a huge help for our program; we’re hoping for a huge turnout on the 22nd.”

Acciardo and Parillo said “we welcome any and all golfers, some out and support our program and enjoy a round of golf on a course that was designed by Donald Ross back in the 1930s and is still regarded as one of this state’s premier golf layouts.”

Golfers who are interested in playing in the June 22 tourney should call Parillo at (401) 580-4486 or Acciardo at (401) 413-4692.
