As the weather starts to cool down, activities inside the Johnston High School gymnasium begin to heat up. In addition to the ever present boys’ and girls’ basketball, ice hockey, and wrestling teams, the Panthers are introducing a new co-ed sport this winter, that being indoor track. The boys’ and girls’ basketball teams are both set to kick off their seasons this tonight. The boys’ varsity team, led by Coach Dan Mazzulla, will be hosting The Wheeler School in the Panther Den at 7 p.m., while the girls’ team will travel to Moses Brown for a 6 p.m. tip-off. The Lady Panthers, headed by Coach Chris Corsinetti, are looking to build upon last year’s success as the Division II champions, holding a perfect 21-0 record.

The boys’ indoor track team, although just breaking ground, was excited to enter its first boys’ meet on Wednesday, with the girls’ team following on Friday at the Providence Career and Technical Academy. The Panthers’ wrestling team will also be hitting the mats soon, with its first tournament being held on Saturday at Mt. Hope High School, beginning at 8 a.m. Lastly, the Johnston/North Providence Co-op ice hockey team has already begun its season on a high note, defeating West Warwick High School, 8-6. Its next contest takes place against the Woonsocket/Scituate Co-op team in Adelard Arena on Saturday at 7:15 p.m.
