The Johnston girls’ basketball team is once again proving that it’s one of the top teams in the state in the early going this season. The Panthers improved to 2-0 in Division II with a 51-18 thumping of Mount St. Charles on Friday evening, before cruising past Division I Bay View, 58-34, in a non-league game on Monday night.

Against the Bengals on Monday, the Panthers raced out to a nine-point lead by halftime, before outscoring Bay View by 15 points in the second half en route to the 24-point rout.

Senior point guard Jordan Moretti paced Johnston in a solid team effort with 13 points and six rebounds. Julianna Zalewski and Bianca Robbins were also main contributors, as Zalewski buried four 3-pointers for 12 points and Robbins added eight points and collected nine boards.

Overall, the Panthers had nine players score in the game. Gabby DiRaimo scored seven points, Cleasia Peoples and Sarah Bandorna added six apiece and Lauren Civetti, Caroline Howe and Amelia Moore contributed a basket each.

Madison D’Ambra led the Bengals with a team-high nine points, while Cassie Pare chipped in with six points of her own.

The victory said a lot about how strong Johnston’s team is this season, as Bay View defeated defending state champion Barrington a few nights prior by five points.

Johnston was set to play at Woonsocket on Wednesday evening, but results were unavailable at press time.

The Panthers will now get some time off for the holidays. Their next league game will be played on Wednesday, Jan. 3 when they host Tolman for a 7 p.m. start. That will begin a busy month for the defending Division II champs, who are slated to play 10 games in the month of January. That group of games will be highlighted by a D-II title game rematch between Johnston and East Providence, set for Wednesday, Jan. 17 at 7 p.m. on the Townies’ home court.
