Panthers celebrate seniors with 15th straight win

Rain was the only thing that could put a slight damper on the Johnston baseball team’s Senior Night on Monday. Otherwise, the Panthers celebrated in style.

Behind two big innings at the plate and strong pitching from Joe Pecchia and Steve Perfetto, the Panthers finished out the regular season with a 14-4 victory over Davies. It was the 15th consecutive win for the Panthers, who also clinched the No. 1 overall seed for the Division II playoffs.

Senior Randy D’Aquila led the offense with two doubles, and senior Eddie Pannone had a two-run single. D’Aquila, Pannone and fellow seniors Pecchia, Gian Bianchi, Chris Pistacchio, McKenzie Robbins and Rubens Grullon were honored in a Senior Night ceremony before the game.

The playoffs are set to begin on Tuesday. Johnston had been locked with Prout in a race for the No. 1 seed, but the Crusaders lost to Exeter/West Greenwich on Sunday, opening the door for the Panthers to clinch the top spot with a win Monday.
