Standing up at Stand Down

Operation Stand Down Rhode Island held its 27th Stand Down Weekend on Sept. 20-21 at Diamond Hill Park in Cumberland, dedicated in the memory of friend, supporter and veteran Nicholas Cardi Jr.

More than 450 veterans attended, and several organizations and groups from around the state provided assistance to those who served. The Rhode Island Traffic Tribunal, Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha’s office and the Rhode Island Public Defender’s office were among those present to lend a hand.

OSDRI Executive Director Erik Wallin said previously there would also be several companies on hand, such as Amazon, who were immediately hiring and offering preferences to veterans.

Maj. Gen. Christopher P. Callahan, adjutant general of the Rhode Island National Guard, and State Command Sgt. Maj. Glen A. DeCecco were among those served lunch to veterans prepared by Johnson & Wales students. Veterans, like the one above, could also appear before Rhode Island District Court Associate Judge Brian A. Goldman to have cases handled.

Wallin said, through an email Tuesday, that the Rhode Island Department of Health and Providence VA Medical Center provided 268 vaccinations to veterans throughout the weekend.
