OLG brings community together for Pasta and Polenta Dinner

Breaking bread together, especially at a home-cooked meal, has been commonplace through the years at Our Lady of Grace Church in Johnston.

Such an act has became a tradition at the Roman Catholic Church during the tenure of the Rev. Peter J. Gower, OLG’s pastor, who takes pride in special suppers that he says “bring people together for fun, food and fellowship.”

One such gathering is OLG’s annual Pasta and Polenta Supper, which recently featured Gower helping to prepare a special appetizer of polenta with cheese and pepperoni just as it is served in his family’s village in Italy.

Thus, Fioretti Hall was adorned with the look of an old-time Italian café – “just as if we were back in the old country” said Gower, who was impressed with the red and white checkered table coverings volunteer parishioners set up especially for the recent supper.

There was yet another table, covered with a red cloth, that featured a total of 25 valuable raffle prizes secured by parishioner and volunteer Joe Andreozzi.

Then there was OLG’s chef, Joe Quartino, who made his famous sauce and also prepared the polenta with assistance from Mike Mancini.

When it came time to ring the dinner bell, more than 140 people filed into Fioretti Hall after Gower celebrated the 4 p.m. Mass and enjoyed dinner. Gower complimented chef Mike Lombardi, the tireless Marilyn Domenico and people who make up OLG’s Holy Name Society.

“It was all a treat,” Gower exclaimed. “We have a great kitchen team here and as the old adage goes, it takes a small village to decorate, set tables, and prepare and cook food. We even had many parishioners pitch in to help clean up Fioretti Hall.”

Gower, who took the time to visit each and every table and thank every person for continuing their untiring support and dedication, he termed the Pasta and Polenta Supper a great success.

He also let it be known it is events like this continue to bring the parish community closer together.
