Oak Ridge Boys coming to Odeum

There aren’t very many groups that can claim over 50 years of entertaining audiences around the world.

One of the best of the best is coming to East Greenwich’s Odeum Theatre on May 18, and you don’t want to miss the Country Music Hall of Famers, The Oak Ridge Boys.

Richard Streban sings bass with the country/gospel group, which has had over 30 members over its many years of continuously providing great music and entertainment.

“We’ve done everything from Elvis to Elvira,” the velvet-voiced singer said. “We sing a little country, a little gospel and, of course, our greatest hit, ‘Elvira.’”

Streban called from his home in Tennessee, just outside of Nashville, where he had a few days off from their Celebration Tour.

“We do about 150 to 160 concerts a year,” he said. “We all enjoy doing what we do, and we plan to keep on doing it.”

I complimented him on his rich, deep voice, to which he responded, “If it wasn’t for this voice, I’d have to get a real job.”

While The Oak Ridge Boys have changed members over the years, the same sound remains. The current quartet has been together for 43 years. With 12 Gold records, three platinum and a dozen number one singles, they have remained at the top of the concert favorites.

“I remember playing the Warwick Musical Theatre many times,” Streban said. “The casinos have taken their place these days.”

Tickets are going quickly, and the show should be a sellout. Call 885-4000 for reservations and information.

Recent renovations to the old movie house have made it a comfortable place to catch a concert. Future concerts include Joan Osborne singing the songs of Bob Dylan on June 1, and Cowboy Mouth on June 18.
