Muniz set for first professional fight on Saturday

Warwick’s own Aaron Muniz (0-0) will be making his professional debut with CES Boxing on Saturday, Feb. 4, when he faces off against Taunton, Massachusetts, native Marqus Bates (0-1) in a four-round welterweight bout at Twin River Casino. Bates lost his first fight to Miguel Ortiz by first round TKO last September.

Muniz, 27, grew up in Providence before moving to Warwick as a teen. He attended Toll Gate High School before going to work at Dennis Diffley Drain Services, where he has worked for the last 12 years.

Muniz first learned about boxing when his mother told him stories of his late grandfather, Michael Muniz, who boxed in the U.S. Navy. Since then, Muniz said he has always been fascinated with the sport.

“I was having dreams of being champion of the world before I put on a boxing glove, so I guess I'm following my dreams,” Muniz said.

Muniz has been preparing for the bout at Hard Knock’s Boxing Club in West Warwick with Angel Camacho, Jr., who holds both the New England Light Heavyweight and the UBF International Light Heavyweight titles, and his manager Jeremy Mitchell.

“I started taking training seriously for competition about two years ago, but I've always been a fighter,” said Muniz, who grew up in the Silver Lake section of Providence.

“The areas that I grew up in were rough,” Muniz continued. “I learned a lot about fighting outside of the boxing ring, as well as studying and analyzing the sport for as long as I can remember.”

Muniz says that he would not get into the ring if he wasn’t prepared for it.

“I believe that fighting is a privilege,” Muniz said. “You have to earn it by training. I would not fight if I felt I didn't train hard enough. So, I have been pushing my body to the limit to tell myself that I deserve it.”

Muniz doesn’t have a specific strategy for the fight, but says that he will be ready for any techniques Bates utilizes.

“I like to take what I'm given, and be prepared for any situation,” Muniz said. “I love a tactical boxing match, but I also love the thrill of dodging big punches and landing my own...I'm ready to go all rounds, but if I get the chance to end it sooner I will. We will have to see what happens on fight night.”

Tickets to the event start at $45 and are available at CESBoxing.com or Twin River Casino.
