Memorial Park benches more than a place to sit

There are a number of mighty monuments and memorials inside Johnston War Memorial Park. Whether it’s the huge Abrams Tank, 105mm Howitzer or the Wall of Honor that’s a tribute and remembrance of those brave Johnstonians who lost their lives while protecting the nation’s freedom during war, the pristine park as Mayor Joseph Polisena calls the town’s treasure, has many different meanings to countless families.

However, there are a number of other types of memorials, all of which were especially erected – and purchased – by families who at one time or another lost a loved one.

They’re called Memorial Park Benches and are spaced throughout Johnston War Memorial Park that feature smartly done bronze plaques with special messages written by families of the deceased individual for whom they are named.

The Johnston Parks and Recreation Department has conducted the Memorial Park Bench program for nearly two decades, according to Vin Jackvony, a veteran staffer and program coordinator who remembers when the first benches were installed at least 15 years ago.

“They are designed to preserve the memory of a loved one,” Jackvony explained about the Memorial Park Benches which has been a resting place for people who want to take a break from walking around the picturesque park during. “In some cases, people have used them to advertise their businesses or simply convey a message with a bench to memorialize a loved one.”

Jackvony also noted the benches have been used for other events such as the Johnston Community Center Association’s popular Movies and Concerts in the Park series or whenever there’s a special event in the stage area.

The newest addition to the number of benches that are strategically placed around the park’s perimeter and offer a place for people who like to sit and take in the view of the park’s pond is nearly complete and will feature the customary 2-inch by 10-inch bronze plaque.

“We’re hoping to complete the project with the concrete pad,” Jackvony noted. “The plaque has already been installed and features the wording “God Blessed us with two very special people – Joseph & Linda Sarandrea – Joseph gave the world magic and Linda her Southern Hospitality.”
