Meat Raffle benefits Senior Center programs
By 5 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 18, as Johnston Senior Center Director Tony Zompa closed up shop, the annual meat raffle was deemed a success.
‚ÄúWe gave away 35 meat packages and 20 turkeys. The day was a huge success; everybody had lots of fun and some people even won multiple prizes,‚ÄĚ Zompa said.
The meat raffle began three years ago and has been a major fundraiser for the center ever since. The event is the brainchild of volunteers Linda Quinn, Cindy Galipeau and Louise Iannotti, who donated the gift certificates and helped run the 50-50 raffle.
‚ÄúThe success of this event ‚Äď as well as others ‚Äď gives our entire staff a great feeling,‚ÄĚ Zompa said. ‚ÄúRemember, no one is getting paid [on Sunday]. We have lots of volunteers and that‚Äôs what makes these events so successful. The people love it here and as a result they pour their hearts into making every single event special.‚ÄĚ
Musician Vini Ames, with the help of his wife Stephanie at the keyboard, kept the crowd entertained between raffles. The duo volunteered their time to help the center.
Also donating his services was Ralph Pari, who donated some of the meat along with Rhode Island Beef and Veal. David Bochner, who owns Atwood Wines and Liquors at 453 Atwood Avenue, helped serve guests and also donated the wine. Other servers came from the Johnston Police Explorers Post 405 and from Linda Garceau, marketing director at Cherry Hill Manor, who donated a gift basket for the raffle.
Zompa called the Meat Raffle ‚Äúa total team effort that resulted in another great event for the Center.‚ÄĚ
