Manton Seniors celebrate Italian heritage

The Manton Seniors held a grand Italian feast recently at their long-time party facility at Twelve Acres in Smithfield. Familiar, too, was the music of the Calamari Brothers, dancing by members and the Italian meal served by the banquet facility.

“This was your typical Italian meal, we have this gala once a year,” said Manton president Lorie DeVito, who established the tradition many years ago out of respect to the non-profit organization’s many Italian members. “Everyone enjoyed the dinner.”

DeVito and her fellow officers praised the Calamari Brothers for their performance, which allowed guests to interact and sing along to some of their favorite tunes.

“They were really, really good,” DeVito said. “The sing-a-long made it that much more special.”

The afternoon’s affair also included a drawing for a host of prizes. Friends of Manton Seniors and area businesses donated the raffle items.

For those Manton Seniors who missed the Italian Gala, DeVito announced four important dates, two each in December and January, that members might not want to miss.

The first of those dates is Tuesday, Dec. 4, when the Manton Seniors will hold their annual election of officers during their monthly meeting that will be held in the parish hall of Our Lady of Grace Church, located off George Waterman Road in Johnston. The meeting will begin at 12:30 p.m. DeVito also announced that the next gala dinner dance is scheduled for Sunday, Dec. 16, at Twelve Acres.

“That will be our annual Christmas party. It’s always a great time,” she said.

The day’s menu will feature a choice of roast prime rib of beef or baked stuff shrimp. Tickets are priced at $30 per person, and people who’d like to purchase tickets should see Rose Coppola or call her at 943-9332. The Calamari Brothers will again provide music.

On Tuesday, Jan. 8, the Manton Seniors will host their official monthly meeting at Our Lady of Grace Church. Discussion will include plans for the inaugural dinner dance that is scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 20, also at Twelve Acres. That afternoon’s dinner choices are boneless stuffed breast of chicken or fish. Tickets are $25 each and can be purchased from Coppola. Festivities will begin at noon.

DeVito also reminded Manton Seniors members that 2013 dues are now being collected.
