Lombardo secures grant for Parks and Recreation

State Sen. Frank S. Lombardo has recently helped make a lot of things special for a number of Johnstonians.

Lombardo, who is the Deputy Majority Whip, has done so by applying for and securing important legislative grants that are given each year to various non-profit groups located in a State Senator or State Representative’s district.

“The Senator never makes any noise about what’s he done,” Tony Zompa, the Johnston Senior Center’s executive director, said. “He’s been a valuable ally for us on several occasions.”

Lombardo has secured those State Legislative Grants ranging from $2,000 to $4,000 when and where there’s a specific need for agencies like the JSC.

He has helped the Johnston Little League, Manton Seniors, JSC and most recently the Johnston Parks and Recreation Department.

On Opening Day of the Johnston Little League, Lombardo informed JPRD Director Daniel Mazzulla inside Kenney Field of a State Legislative Grant secured for $4,000, which he provided to Mazzulla.

“He’s been a friend to many groups in town during his tenure,” Mazzulla said of Lombardo. “He enjoys making a difference and has done so time and again when there is a need.”

Mazzulla announced that the $4,000 will be used to make improvements and upgrades at Johnston War Memorial Park. “We are going to seal coat the walking track around the park,” he said.

Although the long-serving Parks and Recreation chief didn’t expand on those improvements, hundreds of Johnstonians walk around the track nearly every day.

“We in the State Legislature feel these grants are important and sometimes vital,” Lombardo said. “They’re used for a number of things, from transportation for senior citizens to much needed property improvements like our great park and non-profit agencies located throughout the state.”

He explained that groups like the JPRD and JSC make requests and file an application for grants and, Lombardo wanted it known, “In some cases they’re the different in an agency or non-profit continuing – not discontinuing – a certain program.”
