Leaders of tomorrow begin work today

“So you’re a leader…Now what?!”

Thirteen student-athletes from Johnston High School recently attended a workshop that provided some answers to that question, receiving helpful tips at the Leadership 101 and Beyond! Conference hosted by the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association at the MIAA Conference Center in Franklin, Mass.

The students listened to speakers and participated in small group activities that touched on such topics as team building, communication, problem solving, networking and action planning.

Joe Acciardo, a health and physical education teacher at the high school, as well as Johnston’s football and baseball coach, accompanied the students on the trip. He said that when a coach appoints players to be team captains, it is important to help them understand what that means and to teach them the skills that they need to become effective leaders.

“I thought it was a great opportunity for our students,” said Acciardo, who is in the process of establishing a leadership club in Johnston this fall. “We were the only school from Rhode Island there, and it was good for our kids to see what schools in Massachusetts are doing in terms of leadership councils and captains committees. I liked the cooperative learning aspect of the workshop. When we were brainstorming ideas, you got to see a different side of the students that you might not see in the classroom. They interacted with students from other schools, they opened up and they had great ideas.”

The students who participated in the workshop were Ben Budway, Dylan Lavoie, Zack Clesas, Gabriella Constantini, Fallon Davis, David Pingitore, Manny Lourenco, Angel Florez, Bianca Robbins, Grace Muller, David Iannuccilli, Evin Califano and Elijiah Burgess.
