The CCRI Lady Knights basketball team traveled to UConn-Avery Point (UCAP) in Groton, Connecticut, to take on the Pointers in a Region XXI non-league game over the weekend. The Lady Knights defeated the Pointers, 83-75. With the victory, the Lady Knights improved to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in Region XXI play.

This game is traditionally a very tough contest for both teams as they both like to play up-tempo and score, which makes for an exciting game, and this game lived up to the billing. Both teams played evenly in the first quarter as they tried to find their bearings, battling to an 18-18 tie until the second quarter, when the UCAP offense got hot. In the second, UCAP scored the first nine points, led by Mia Brennan, who scored 10 of the Pointers’ 27 second-quarter points, which included two 3-pointers. UCAP took an eight-point lead into the halftime break, with the score 45-37.

The Lady Knights would answer back in the third quarter with their own 27-point outburst, led by co-captain Tiondra Hands (Boynton Beach, Florida), who scored 11 of the Lady Knights’ 27 with help from Jada Littlejohn (Providence, Rhode Island), who added four points, while getting 3-pointers from D’Asia Allen (Providence, Rhode Island), co-captain Kelsey Hernandez (New Britain, Connecticut) and Hands.

Going into the fourth quarter, CCRI had a narrow 64-63 lead. However, it also had a few players in foul trouble while on the road in a hostile environment, so it knew it would have to dig deep to secure this victory.

Littlejohn led the charge in the fourth quarter with seven points, including a 3-pointer, with help from a balanced team attack with six other Lady Knights also contributing to the scoring to secure the hard-fought 83-75 Region XXI road victory.

Leading the way for the Lady Knights was Littlejohn, who charted her first collegiate double-double, scoring a team-high 22 points with 12 rebounds, four assists and a steal, followed by Hands, who had 21 points with two 3-pointers, nine assists, five rebounds and a steal. Also scoring in double-figures was Allen with 12 points, including three 3-pointers, five rebounds, two assists and two steals and Nia Mims (Newark, New Jersey) had 10 points with two 3-pointers, five assists and four steals. UCAP’s Tatyana LaFrance-Boyce led all scorers with 24 points and 10 rebounds.

The next game for the Lady Knights will be this Saturday at 1 p.m., when they will host the Bayhawks of Bristol Community College from Fall River, Massachusetts, in another Region XXI non-league game.
