Lady Knights eliminated from regional

Posted

The CCRI Lady Knights softball team traveled to Orange County Community College in Middletown, New York, to compete in the Region XV/III/XXI Super Regional. CCRI, Orange County Community College and Mercyhurst North East stand alone in DII softball in their regions, so they meet for the Super Regional to see who moves on to the District K Tournament hosted by Region XIX. CCRI defeated Orange County, 5-2, then lost to Mercyhurst, 9-0, on Saturday. On Sunday, CCRI and MNE met again with MNE winning 7-1. With the 1-2 record for the weekend, the Lady Knights end their season with a 12-7 overall record and were runners-up in the Region Tournament.

Game 1: CCRI- 5

Orange County CC- 2

In the circle for the Lady Knights in the first game was Danielle David (West Greenwich, Rhode Island), who threw seven strong innings, allowing just one earned run on five hits while walking three and striking out one Colt batter to earn the victory. The win improves her pitching record to 4-1 on the season. David also helped her cause at the plate, going a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs scored and two stolen bases.

David had three hits, but the CCRI offense was really ignited  by tri-captain Maddy Cooper (Pawtucket, Rhode Island), who blasted a two-run home run in the first inning, and Miranda Sasso (Smithfield, Rhode Island) went back-to-back with Cooper in the first to give CCRI a 3-2 lead. Sasso also added a single and a run scored. Kailee Morgan (Charlestown, Rhode Island) had a single and an RBI, while tri-captains Bella Malvinni (Westerly, Rhode Island) and Courtney Sheridan (Warwick, Rhode Island) added a hit apiece.

Game 2: CCRI- 0

Mercyhurst- 9

In the circle for the Lady Knights was Danielle David, who drew the very potent offense of the No. 14-ranked Saints of MNE. David gave up seven runs on eight hits over three innings. That is a very respectable pitching line versus the Saints, who came in boasting a .397 team batting average. Courtney Sheridan relieved David in the fourth and gave up two runs on a hit and a walk.

The Lady Knights could only muster one hit and a walk off Mercyhurst ace Leighlyn Guthrie. Tri-captain Maddy Cooper had the hit, while tri-captain Bella Malvinni had the walk and a stolen base. Miranda Sasso also reached base for the Lady Knights via an error, and also stole a base, but that was not enough to catch the Saints’ nine-run offensive outburst.

Game 3: CCRI (1-1)- 1 Mercyhurst (2-0)- 7

In the circle for the Lady Knights was tri-captain Courtney Sheridan who pitched masterfully over her first five innings, allowing just one run. In the fifth inning, Sheridan played hero as she hit a solo home run to tie the game at 1. However, in the bottom of the sixth inning, Mercyhurst broke the game open with a six-run outburst. Mercyhurst got two quick hits and then CCRI got a ground out to the pitcher, before a fielding error by CCRI opened the door for Mercyhurst, which made that error hurt with a grand slam later in the inning. In all, Sheridan threw six strong innings, allowing five earned runs on eight hits, walking six and striking out three Mercyhurst batters. Sheridan took the loss, but ended the season with an excellent 1.90 ERA and 72 strikeouts in 48 innings pitched, holding opposing batters to a .153 batting average. For her career she leaves CCRI as the strikeout leader in every category: single same with 16, single season with 148 and career with 220.

Other offensive highlights from this game included tri-captain Maddy Cooper chipping in with a double. Miranda Sasso and Stevie-Rae Travers (Little Compton, Rhode Island) each added a hit, while Sheridan had two hits, including the home run and a single.
