Knights hold off Academy Baseball of Canada

The CCRI baseball team faced off against the Academy Baseball of Canada team for a single game under the Florida sun. A scoreless game through three and a half innings eventually went the way of the Knights in the bottom of the fourth, and after ABC tied it up the following inning, CCRI would take the lead back, scoring another two runs. The final score was 4-3 in favor of the Knights, improving CCRI’s season record to 2-1.

Fresh off a split of a doubleheader the day before, the Knights would play a single game against the Academy Baseball of Canada team. A pitchers’ duel had ABC and CCRI neck and neck half way through the game. The Knights’ bats awoke in the bottom of the fourth, taking a 2-0 lead. Leading the Knights at the plate was Jarrad Grossguth (Coventry, Rhode Island) and Austin Davis (Hollywood, Florida), who both went 2-for-3 on the day with Grossguth driving in one RBI.

ABC would claw back, scoring two runs off of Max Marcotte (Coventry, Rhode Island). Marcotte’s pitching on the day was immense, going five innings, allowing just two earned runs off of three hits. Marcotte struck out six batters, as well. He was relieved by Korey Fijal (Johnston, Rhode Island), allowing one earned run off of four hits in two innings pitched. Fijal and Marcotte combined for seven innings pitched, nine strikeouts and just three runs allowed.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Knights added two more runs, taking a 4-2 lead. ABC would take one run back, but Fijal was able to close out the game, securing Marcotte’s first win of the season.
