Kid around with goats this weekend

Kids like Jean Ralphio, Vincent Van Goat and Salvadore will be on hand Saturday for the 9th Annual Fall on the Hill that’s hosted by the Neutaconkanut Hill Conservancy.

Elli Panichas, who has long volunteered her time and communication skills, also announced that Middie Kid – brother to the kids named above – will also take part in the event that she notes will be held in “the only Natural Forest in Providence”, also known as The Meadow at the summit of Neutaconkanut Hill that borders in Johnston.

“We’re inviting the general public to enjoy an afternoon of forest adventure and fun on Neutaconkanut Hill,” said Panichas. “People will be amazed to discover this natural beauty as well as walking trails built by the WPA (Works Progress Administration) in the 1930s that’s been re-developed in recent years.”

Saturday’s event will begin at noon and run until 4 p.m. Panichas said in the event of rain, Fall on the Hill will be moved to Sunday, Oct. 1, at the same time.

She also noted that young and old alike will be able to enjoy breath-taking view of Providence from Neutaconkanut Hill, which is said to be the highest point in the capital city that’s located right on the Johnston town line.

“People who have walked the trails on the summit in past year have been amazed that they can actually see the Pell Bridge (in Newport) that spans the East Passage on Narragansett Bay then to nearby New Bedford,” Panichas went on. “The view from the summit is amazing.”

That could also be a tagline for Saturday’s free event, which will feature a segment entitled “Meet the Kids, courtesy of the NHC and Providence Parks Department.

“We’ll introduce Jean Ralphio, Vincent Van Goat and Salvadore,” Panichas said of the dwarf Nigerian goats, which love to eat poison ivy. “Come and watch them strut on the hill to the Meadow and lean just how they will keep our forestland free of invasive plants such as poison ivy.”

She also announced that Saturday’s family-oriented free event will include guided walks on the many trails, a chance for children to enjoy the always-fascinating fire trucks, music and a chance to roast marshmallows over an open fire as well as snacks like pop corn and non-alcoholic beverages.

Panichas announced that people will meet at the Hilltop Meadow on Legion Memorial Drive near Neutaconkanut Park and will be assisted by parking attendants. Those people planning to take a walk or hike on the trails should dress accordingly.

For those not familiar with the area, Neutaconkanut Hill is an 88-acre forested park with six miles of walking and hiking trails and spectacular views. It’s rich in history, and was founded in 1636 as the Northwest Passage boundary agreed upon by Roger Williams and the Narragansett Sachems.
