FRAUDULENT CHECKS
Patrolman Richard J. Varan and Sgt. Joseph Schichilone responded to Sixth Division District Court the morning of Dec. 12 to take Mickey Thayorath, 60, 194 Jewitt St., Providence, into custody on a Johnston Police Department warrant. Thayorath is charged with fraudulent checks under $1,500.
Thayorath was taken to Johnston Police headquarters, and was later arraigned and released on $1,000 personal recognizance until a rearraignment on Jan. 6.
Thayorath’s arrest was connected to an alleged incident that took place in December 2016. On Dec. 12 of that year, the general manager of a local business responded to Johnston Police headquarters in reference to a fraudulent check complaint.
Patrolman Joseph D. Anderson spoke with the reporting party, who said that on June 6 a $1,100 personal check from Thayorath for a vehicle payment was deposited at the bank. The check was later returned due to insufficient funds. The person said the company had made attempts to contact Thayorath but was unsuccessful, at which point police were contacted.
An investigation by detectives later led to the issuance of the warrant.
LARCENY
On Dec. 9, detectives Anthony Sasso and Thomas M. Dwyer responded to 18 Scenery Lane and arrested Michael James DeCosta Jr., 23, 57 Batty St., Providence, on an active arrest warrant for felony larceny. He was apprehended without incident.
DeCosta’s arrest stemmed from an alleged incident that took place on Nov 21. Patrolman Nicholas A. Mannocchio wrote that he responded to Hartford Avenue for a report of larceny. Upon arrival, Mannocchio said he spoke with the reporting party, who stated that approximately $15,000 worth of designer handbags and suitcases were stolen from her home. Mannocchio said that she believed the person responsible was DaCosta. When asked why she suspected him, she said that he had previously stolen from her in the past.
The reporting party told Mannocchio that DeCosta was last at her residence on Nov. 19. He was helping her clean the basement when he went upstairs to retrieve a broom and was unsupervised while she continued to clean. Mannocchio said that was when the reporting party believes the items were stolen.
Johnston Police officers responded to 176 Simmonsville Ave. in Johnston on the morning of Dec. 6 in an attempt to locate Alexander Ruotolo, 18, of the above address, according to Sgt. Luca Lancellotti Jr.
Ruotolo was arrested on a felony charge of driving to endanger resulting in physical injury and a misdemeanor charge of reckless driving. Ruotolo was released on $5,000 personal recognizance until a pre-arraignment conference set for March 6.
Ruotolo’s arrest stemmed from an alleged incident that occurred the morning of Dec. 3. Lancellotti wrote that officers responded to Stone Hill Drive for a motor vehicle accident with injuries, in which both vehicles sustained disabling damage. The first vehicle was traveling east on Stone Hill Drive when his car was struck by the second vehicle, which was traveling west in the eastbound travel lane at a high rate of speed.
Two passengers in the second vehicle advised that Ruotolo purposely drove on the wrong side of the road to “show off.” They both advised that he was driving recklessly and they both told him to stop and not drive on the wrong side of the road.
The operator of the first vehicle also stated that Ruotolo was driving on the wrong side of the road. He said that he was coming around the corner by the Home Depot when Ruotolo’s vehicle, traveling in the wrong direction, came at him head on.
The driver of the first vehicle said that he hit his brakes immediately and went over to the right as far as possible to avoid a collision. He said that the second vehicle lost control and went sideways into his direction. The driver stated that at that point his vehicle was struck by the second vehicle in the front passenger side.
A passenger in the backseat of the first car later corroborated that the second vehicle was coming from the wrong way, Lancellotti said. The man said he closed his eyes just before the crash.
WARRANT
Patrolman Adam M. Parkinson was on a fixed traffic post at 985 Hartford Ave. when he observed a vehicle traveling westbound with a cracked windshield.
A RILETS files check revealed that the registration plate should belong to a tan 2009 Kia, but it was affixed to a silver 2008 Toyota Camry. Parkinson said he detained the vehicle in the parking lot of Burger King at 1375 Hartford Ave., where he spoke to the operator, who provided valid paperwork for the recently purchased vehicle and had an active license.
A check did reveal, though, that her passenger, Joshua Lopes, 33, 21 Mark Drive, Providence, had an active NCIC warrant, which was entered on Oct. 4 and confirmed active. Lopes was taken into custody without incident and transported to Johnston Police headquarters pending retrieval by the Providence Police Department.
